No one who isn’t currently at ASFS joined the PTA and voted in the recent election. Two people who live in the neighborhood who would like to eventually attend the school came to one meeting where no election was held.

However, at the meeting where elections were held, the attendance record reached an all time high with new members/attendees who currently attend ASFS but had never come to a previous meeting. They showed up with copies of the same email (probably from the same PP accusing neighborhood people of being racist for wanting to walk to school) telling them who to vote for/vote out. Once the vote was over (and before the results were announced), they all left.

If anything, all these posts about ASFS support the need for APS and the SB to redrawn boundaries around ASFS sooner rather than later so that we can all be spared any further threads on the issue.

thanks for the accurate description

Actually not accurate; Cherrydale parents are fine to meet with PTA and advocate for their kids to attend a school; it’s when they cross the line and recommend cutting the boundary at Barton and giving direction for children not their own that they went to far.

Current ASFS parents have advocated FOR a walk zone, and instead of kicking people out they put together a plan and the PTA recommended for making use of the Buck property temporarily to use as swing class space while this demographic bulge and rezoning morass is worked out.

That was the recommendation of the diabolical Rosslyn parents and their PTA leadership — expand into Cherrydale and make room.

Actually, actually this is another fabrication.

The letter that "Rosslyn parents and their PTA leadership" wrote was a cut and paste copy (otherwise known as plagiarized) letter that a walk zone family wrote a year earlier to the SB--how ironic. We won't get into how the cray crays treated their family, other than to say it was beyond shameful.

Don't believe anything this poster says. They are deceitful and detached from reality. They mix just enough truth into stories to make them believable, but in reality they are filled with disinformation.

It’s true the Clardndon/Courthouse/Rosslyn parents did not originally support expanding into the Buck property/Cherrydale.Their efforts were concentrated on moving/swapping ASFS with Key to establish ASFS as their neighborhood school. When the SB took moving option schools off the table this past spring, their tune suddenly changed. Again, anything not to be rezoned to Long Branch or Taylor. Also why they are so desperate to maintain the current boundaries- they are hoping that they can still push for a Key/ASFS swap in 2021. If boundaries change now, though, they won’t be able to say “but it’s our neighborhood school not theirs” anymore, which was a main argument for their swap position.

But why? What is wrong with either Taylor or Long Branch? I’m so baffled by this whole thing, it’s batshit even by APS standards.

+1

What’s so bad about going to Taylor or Long Branch? Rosslyn parents cannot be this fanatic over ASFS, can they?

There is no way to get to either Long Branch or Taylor through metro or bus. Many families in the ne quadrant don’t own cars. Picking up from extended day would be impossible and a lot of people would probably move.

But isn’t that true of ASFS too? It’s a mile from the Metro. Although there are buses down Lee Highway, you still have to walk a quarter mile to the school. Route 50 buses seem more manageable. And if it’s too hard to get to Extended Day, the more sensible solution would be to find after school care once they get off the bus, ie, a babysitter pick-up, etc. I know lots of parents who do after school babysitter shares. Extended day is a great option for working parents but it’s not the only option.

The 53 ART bus runs up Military Rd within walking distance of Taylor and can be picked up from the 55 out of Rosslyn and from the Ballston Metro station.

The 4A Metrobus runs from Rosslyn to within half a block of Long Branch on 50. The 4B Metrobus also runs from Rosslyn to about six blocks north of Long Branch on Pershing.

I call absolute BS on the myth that people in the NE quadrant don't own cars and are picking up their kids from extended day via public transit.
APS GO for ASFS- less than 1% get to school using public transit- https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Arlington_Science_Focus_v2.pdf
APS GO for Key- also less than 1$ https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Francis_Scott_Key_v2.pdf

Yes, there are poor families in the NE quadrant who don't have cars. Those families truly to poor to have a car typically don't have jobs that are compatible with extended day. Their kids take the bus where they are either latchkey kids, cared for by older siblings, cared for by family members, cared for by a sitter. Extended day is for middle class families working 9-5 jobs.

So asfs is 0.4 miles from two metro stops. A lot of people metro and then walk.
Either way there is a ton of bitterness on both sides at this point.
It’s not a particularly good school and the parents are crazy. There’s bullying by parents. The extra science is a joke. It’s basically a third of the time that is set aside for fles. Asfs sits on top of 66, and they are converting its field to artificial turf that is carcinogenic. The administration is racist and classist. its been this way for the past decade that I’ve had kids there. Check out the review on great schools if you don’t believe me. I’m not really sure what people are fighting for here.

So to recap:

- Families in the zone formerly known as Key want to stay at ASFS because it's been their neighborhood school for all of recent memory. Inconvenient fact - the actual building doesn't sit in the zone, and a walk zone will need to be created and kids will be zoned in. Some people will have to be zoned out.

- Cherrydale families: This is a nebulous group. Some of them are in the legitimate walkzone and will be zoned in, they have a rock solid case. Others are nearby but not in the walkzone. They do not have a stronger case than anyone else to be moved because they are bus riders.

- Lyon Village: They have been split between area FKA Key and Taylor. I don't believe any of Lyon Village was added to the ASFS walkzone, so they don't have a claim beyond needing to connect the walkzone to the east and the FKA Key historic claim.

Complicating facts:

- Key was also a neighborhood school until last year. In the current year lottery, non-Spanish speakers with no sibling preference had about a 50/50 chance of getting admitted in the kindergarten lottery. Over time this will send more kids to neighborhood schools from FKA Key Zone.

- Taylor has seats that need to be filled. This will include kids from somewhere south of Lee Highway, though most of these families would prefer to go elsewhere. Taylor is an excellent school, but it is not well located for people who do not live in the immediate area.

- Long Branch may not have any seats for kids to the north and east, it just depends on how they draw the Fleet lines.

Final important fact: some people are insane and on DCUM no one knows who you are so you can say whatever batsh*t thing you want.

As seen from the walk zone review it is far far too dangerous to walk from either metro stop to ASFS. The cray crays made power point presentations and had the their civic associations lobby for how dangerous it was to walk to ASFS. Oh yeah they lobbied the SB too. The met with APS staff en mass. This was in the misguided attempt to make ASFS more appealing as an option school location to support "the swap" with Key. I'm sorry no one is bullying you, people are just calling a spade a spade. When the Key community strongly opposed moving locations, the ASFS staff opposed moving, and the neighborhood opposed moving the school and the position taken by the cray crays is we would rather dismantle the school than to let anyone else go there that is offensive, illogical, and selfish.

If anyone was bullied is was the poor Cherrydale moms who were repeatedly verbally accosted by Rosslyn/Courthouse parents.

The school is great. The field is being converted this summer yes. No its not carcinogenic, but that another convenient made up "fact". You really should stop playing the racist/classist card. Besides the fact it simply is not true, the staff is very diverse and they welcome all who conduct themselves in a mutually respectful manor, misapplying the label undermines your credibility and your weak position.

It sounds like you don't like going to the school. I suggest you go somewhere else. There are many people who have invested much time and effort to make the school what it is today.

This whole post is so made up. Dismantle the school? Poor Cherrydale moms? None of that happened.

I don’t think any of the Cherrydale families were bullied but the Clarendon/Courthouse/Rosslyn/Lyon Village folks sure are reaping what they sowed when the declared Kirkwood was too dangerous to cross but are now claiming the Rosslyn folks must attend ASFS because they have to walk from the metro. My map says the quickest walking route from Clarendon metro to ASFS is .6 miles and VA Square is .8 miles. Both routes either cross or walk along Kirkwood. So, by their own logic, Rosslyn families should not be zoned to ASFS and be forced to risk their lives crossing Kirkwood to get to Extended Day.

First of all it was the county that said Kirkwood was too busy to cross. Secondly, the quickest route is Art 55 and parents would take the bus and walk 0.3 miles.

Second, you are conflating street crossing for solo children (the walk zone) versus parents pickup up kids. Do you think 5th graders are taking metro on their own in APS.

At the end of the day, for Rosslyn the closest neighborhood school with the most direct traffic is ASFS — that’s why the parents are defending it, b/c LB and Taylor require mixing with arterial roads during rush hours.

Where did you get those numbers? There’s a sign at the YMCA that says the Clarendon metro is 0.4 miles.

all irrelevant when less than 1% use public transit to get to school - by and large this community utilizes school busses - throw as many red herrings around as you'd like, a bus will be provided for you no matter where you attend

I had 4 kids at ASFS for 16 consecutive years, most of which included them in morning and afternoon extended day. Not once did I hear about or see a family taking a bus up or down Lee Highway to bring their kids to extended day or pick them up from extended day. And the only parents I ever saw doing this via metro were those of us who live in ASFS’s immediate neighborhood who took the metro to work. I did see lots of cars and every once in awhile a taxi. Not saying it didn’t happen on a rare occasion but no way was this a regular thing done by families.

I think it’s pretty clear that the reasons are that people hate change and that no one wants to schlep up to Taylor.
