On April 28, 1996, a gunman opened fire on tourists in a seaside resort in Port Arthur, Tasmania. By the time he was finished, he had killed 35 people and wounded 23 more. It was the worst mass murder in Australia’s history.

Twelve days later, Australia’s government did something remarkable. Led by newly elected conservative Prime Minister John Howard, it announced a bipartisan deal with state and local governments to enact sweeping gun-control measures. A decade and a half hence, the results of these policy changes are clear: They worked really, really well.

What did they do? What did they change?

They banned guns. http://thefederalist.com/2015/06/25/the-australia-gun-control-fallacy/

Are you suggesting mandatory confiscation of all firearms? Please explain how this would work.

ban on all semi-automatic rifles and all semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns, and a tightly restrictive system of licensing and ownership controls.

no one needs semi-automatic rifle to hunt

Mandatory confiscation of those weapons? How would you do that?

Gun buy back program, then amnesty for a while. Then I would impose stiff penalties and punishments.

I would rather have a homeless shelter there.

I own a gun. I also have kids in the school.

I will bake cookies with the McLean Moms.

You don't live in McLean. McLean moms don't have time to bake cookies.

Vicky isn't the only mom in mclean. Lots of mclean moms make time to bake cookies.

I sure don't. Most moms don't even cook because they are professionals and don't have the time. I've never made cookies in McLean. Bought them for bake-sales, yes. Make them from scratch? No. No time.

Exactly. Hence, the NEGLECTED children. Showing children how to cook is part of responsible parenting. But both PARENTS are too damn BUSY for that. Then you'll be wondering why your kids are doing alcohol and drugs in high school. And raging with anger.

It's called PARENTAL neglect... right in McLean.
These neglected kids have good reason to be angry.
Their parents are too busy to parent.

...Neglected children often (not always) become angry adults.

Why? You asked how you would do this. This is how you do it.

Someone else asked. I said it is scary. It's scary to think that some people would entertain the idea of our government giving an amnesty period to turn in guns and then punishing those who have one.

The gun crazies can keep on talking to themselves but the rest of the world recognizes the insanity in this country for what it is.

Locating a gun store adjacent to an elementary school is obviously ridiculous.

Well, I think it is scarier that innocent people including children keep getting their brains blown out by idiots with guns.

Adam's parents essentially abandoned him by giving their deranged boy everything he demanded... including lethal weapons.

How dare anyone here say he had good parents?

I think we should all be aware of the neglected kid who very well may live next door. Forget about political correctness and take an interest in the child, in whatever way may be appropriate. Each one of us can actually do something. Today.

Is that scary? Yes. Of course it is. It's a shame that it happens. It's beyond sad. It is also scary to think that people are willing to allow the government to take guns away from law abiding citizens.

It is really sickening to see that there is a mass shooting almost everyday. How is this acceptable?
