They do not understand that. They also can’t imagine that a leader’s character matters, obviously.

They also don’t understand that military rules are expectations are different than civilians.

Old news. The affair he had a decade ago is irrelevant now. Sure, if he has another affair while SoD and starts sharing classified documents with his mistress and compromising security, David Petraeus style, that’s a different story. We’ll see if he can keep his parts to himself.

The only time I’ve seen a service member punished for an affair under UCMJ was if the affair partner was another service member’s spouse (makes for some hard feelings at work!) or if the affair partner was also a service member and it was fraternization, or if the affair comprised their duty/mission/security.

A National Gaurd solider having an affair with a civilian is unlikely to be prosecuted, which is exactly why he wasn’t.

No. Not at all. We’re saying that you would get passed over for a leadership position/command. It’s “conduct unbecoming.” And of if he cheated while in command, he’d be let go and moved to a less desirable position with not much hope of upward career trajectory.
