That’s a lie to entice Wootton to accept this deal. How is it cheaper if it costs 400 million? Have some common sense! |
I don’t think it’s 1/2. Maybe more close to 1/4 |
Correct, Wootton families do not want to move their high school out of their community. If there is no move, then there should not be a need to add two more elementary schools as feeders. Show your work that it would be the most cost-effective move for the county. If you don't live in the Wootton community, you have no idea about the "real impact" on it. |
Show your work that it is "cheaper and easier to tear it down with plumbing, electrical and mold." If Wootton will be used as a holding school, then those problems will need to be fixed, so why not fix them now? If they are not fixed immediately, Wootton will become uninhabitable and MCPS will have forced a move that Wootton parents do not want. Wootton is already at the back of the line. It was closer to the front, but was pulled from renovation not once, but TWICE. Despite this, Wootton parents are patient and will wait again - but want the immediate problems fixed without being forced to move. This is not purely a dollars and cents decision. It does not make sense to move Wootton just to fill Crown. Let Crown fill up organically on its own. |
It will cost ~$400M to build Crown - a school that Wootton parents didn't ask to have built for them. They don't want it. |
| Turning Wootton HS as a holding school is just an option for future projects which won't happen probably at the earliest until Damascus HS is fully renovated/rebuilt. It all depends on the mcps enrollment numbers and money fund. If there is not enough mcps enrollment and no money, they may not need a holding school or push the idea of turning Wootton HS as a holding school more later like a decade or two later. It is just my thoughts. We don't need a holding school or permanent Crown HS when mcps is currently underenrolled. |
Yeah definitely better to have a huge abandoned building right on Wootton pkwy for the foreseeable future. Also if you have ever talked to anyone in construction-the longer a building sits empty like that, its condition just gets considerably worse. |
You must be new around here. The Wootton building won't be abandoned. MCPS will sell the land to a developer for cheap to build new housing that will then feed into Crown. Maybe even a townhouse development that will vastly increase traffic on Wootton Parkway. Keeping Wootton where it is controls traffic speeds and increases safety along Wootton Parkway. |
There is no question that MCPS needs a secondary holding school given all of the construction needs at the HS level. How can you argue that when Wootton, Magruder, Damascus and Sherwood are crumbling as we speak, and several other high schools (Quince Orchard, Kennedy and Einstein) are on the brink? MCPS definitely needs a secondary holding school without a doubt. The question is, should that holding school be the brand-new Crown or the existing Wootton building? |
| Definitely Crown better as a holding school. Can hold more students, and good location off highway for students commuting from all around MoCo. Esp for Magruder, Damascus, even Sherwood. Would QO even fit into Wootton as a holding school? |
Damascus, Kennedy and Einstein are too far away. They are opposition directions if one drive along by 270. No ways they would use Crown or Wootton building as a holding school. |
So then what would even be the point of either school being a holding school? |
This makes sense. Wootton's location is unsuitable as a holding school. Wootton Parkway and the intersection of I-270 with Falls Road can't absorb significant traffic increases from around MoCo. The traffic is already bad in that area. Also, increased traffic around Wootton could put pedestrians/cyclists using the Wootton Parkway at risk. I've seen numerous near misses of pedestrians and bicycles from cars turning right onto Wootton Parkway after getting off I-270. |
How much do you think the repairs will cost? |
If they ever need a holding school, crown is definitely much better location. Shorter commute and central to other schools than Wootton. Wootton is simply way too far from either Damascus or Magruder or Sherwood. |
