You people are so disgusting with your Israel obsession. I hope it keeps you up at night.

Because within 48 hours it was pretty clear that Syria wasn't "liberated." Its just being carved up by colonial powers and Islamic warlords with all that comes with it.

lol well this entire thread is about Israel despite the fact that pretty much only Israel took actions consistent of limited defense of its own borders, and took other steps for the common good (destroying chemical weapons). Crickets about Turkey, US, Russia and Iran.

I'm just going to sit back and patiently wait for the Rules Based Order to sanction Turkey and Israel like they did Russia and Iran for far less.

Did Israel invade and annex part of another country that did nothing to provoke the attack?

Of course not. Inconvenient, since the facts belie the narrative some here like to promote.

Anyway, Syria is a story which is still unfolding. Optimists hope the rebels represent a positive change; pessimists suspect it'll be "second verse, same as the first", just with different thugs and autocrats in charge. Clearly, Israel's rapid creation of border buffer zones suggest it has no faith that the new regime can be counted on to exercise restraint if it comes into possession of the old regime's mustard gas and sarin supplies, not to mention its warships and other conventional weapons. Time will tell.

And now, conveniently, the new regime can be bombed at will by Israel with no air defense.

It thus would be in their interests to choose peace and democracy and respecting religious and individual freedoms then.

They have peace and democracy now.
That is why Israel has invaded

If you're speaking of Syria, this is all patently false.

Israel preferred the regime? Invaded only now to punish the nation for being free?

The devil you know versus the devil who has yet to show his true face. There is ample reason to be suspicious of the kind of government and policies the rebels are likely to implement once the honeymoon is over.

Israel has F-35s. Russian air defense systems aren't a huge problem for them. And Israel has been bombing targets in Syria at will for years now.

The matter-of-fact way in which you acknowledge Israel bombing targets in Syria (and elsewhere) “at will for years now”, using U.S. tech, is crazy. You and Israel simply don’t deserve peace.

ok! How do you feel about Russia, Iran and Turkey??

Do they use U.S. funding and tech. to terrorize their neighbors?

Ordinarily, IRL, I don’t engage with racist, Islamophobic bigots; but in this case, since you wasted everyone’s time with a shitty, par-for-the-course, feeble strawman, I figured I would batter back onto your lap for some laughs.

Where’s the strawman? making ridiculous claims about Israel being the boogeyman in Syria while ignoring all of the other nations involved just makes crystal clear that you are motivated by animus and not actually engaging honestly.

They are not ridiculous claims. A statement you implicitly agreed with by comparing their actions to Russia, Iran and Turkey. All three of those peer countries are also racist, expansionist, authoritarian regimes that commit daily human rights violations and other atrocities. Two of the three are even global pariahs. Why would you think their actions justify anything?

You are the only one here seeing things exclusively through the frame of blame and accountability. the rest of us want to talk about the overall picture and not focus exclusively on your anti-Israel hobbyhorse. so got anything useful to add?

No, that’s NOT your agenda.

Your actual agenda is to try to commandeer moderation of the discussion by accusing anyone who identifies Israel’s role in regional instability as “anti-semitic”. You desperately try to undermine the criticism of Israel without actually addressing the criticism. And you go super saiyan victim mode whenever anyone references Israel’s terrorism by attacking the person and literally dismissing any criticism of Israel.

lol no. I very assiduously have not flagged anything. But you sure dislike being called out as antisemitic.

I want to discuss Israel’s roll but all you want to to is turn this into a ridiculous thread distorting what’s happening because yes, you are resolutely antisemitic.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is on lists of banned terrorist groups in the U.K. and in the U.S., as an alias of al-Qaeda. Under the circumstances, it seems appropriate to question just how "free" Syria will end up being. Similarly, those same circumstances support defanging the group to disuade it from considering expansion beyond Syrian borders.

I have no idea what you’re trying to say. BUT anyone the tiniest bit informed about Syria right now sees that attempts to monopolize the discussion and make it all about Israel, while ignoring the other 3 nations and many insurgent groups involved, means you are biased against Israel. If anything it actually clarifies what criticism of Israel is often motivated by.

They want to use deflection tactics to distract the conversation.

Israel is currently airstriking and taking over Southeastern Syria and the new government has said nothing about it affirming what many already suspected. It is indeed an Israeli proxy government leading Syria hence Benjamin Netanyahu's excitement and announcement in the Golan Heights last week minutes after the fall of Damascus.

You know the biggest downfall for Netanyahu is he has never played coy or discreet. Everyone can see his cards.

looking back on the Arab Spring, what mistakes were made by the US? Should Obama have stayed completely out of it, or should we have weighed in more decisively against Assad then?

My personal feeling is that Americans have an overly naive view about “democracy” (or maybe they are just liars). Even now you hear American commentators say that they hope the Syrians can become a democratic state. That just seems like a naive wish.

Assad comes from the Alawaite Shia sect of Islam, a minority that has elements of Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Gnosticism, and neo-Platonism. They were seen as heretics and faced massive backlash from Muslims and Christians throughout centuries. They celebrate Christmas, Easter, but also believe in reincarnation.
They are a fascinating example of the ancient religious diversity in the Levant. There are also other faiths in this area like the Druze (George Clooney's wife). They are Muslims who celebrate Christmas and drink alcohol. Yazidis are another minority group.

With the Levant, theres no race. Your identity and whats on your birth certificate is your religion. It all falls back to religion in the Levant (Jewish, Islam, Christianity, other faiths). Democracy cannot work when people are so religiously ideological and identify politics and their identity with their religion. Even in Israel it doesnt work. It all comes back to the religion.

This is why the US version of democracy or majority rule cannot work in Syria or Iraq.

The best version is not giving the country to religious ideologues which is what America just did. Secular dictators like Assad and Saddam were way better. Not the best, but way better than what the countries have now.

As soon as the ceasefire was announced with Lebanon, Al Qaeda and ISIS rebels took over Syria with the help of Israeli air cover/air strikes. Netanyahu never takes a day off. One door closes, and then you fall into a booby trap under the next door.

Remember when the US left billions in equipment to the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2021? Turns out Taliban was training some of these Syrian rebels so that's nice.

It's just like when the US invaded Libya and stole all the Libyan military equipment and gave it to ISIS.

Trump's only mistake is he thinks our government and generals are stupid. They arent stupid. They were never against terrorists. They were always our friends/concoctions going back to the early days of Taliban and Al Qaeda. We are in the business of ending wars and terrorism in that region of the world and Trump doesnt understand that yet.

We are not in the business of ending wars and terrorism in that region of the world.

The primary cog of our export engine is essentially war (and has been for the past 60 - 70 years), but this ^^^ yahoo is running around trying to convince anyone who will listen that we are in the business of ending wars?

Are you serious, sir or madam?

Assad was an eye surgeon in a London hospital before his elder brother was killed in a car crash. The elder brother was lined up to replace his dad, but Assad did after the death of his father.

Assad wasnt even in Syria for most of his adult life. He was a Londoner and his wife was a London born Syrian woman raised in London her entire life, the daughter of a cardiologist and one of the first female Arab diplomats. They were Sunni Arabs from Homs, Syria. The same city now taken over by terrorists.

Great going for the US.
