Getting away from the obsessed antisemites clouding the thread … looking back on the Arab Spring, what mistakes were made by the US? Should Obama have stayed completely out of it, or should we have weighed in more decisively against Assad then? My personal feeling is that Americans have an overly naive view about “democracy” (or maybe they are just liars). Even now you hear American commentators say that they hope the Syrians can become a democratic state. That just seems like a naive wish.
Assad comes from the Alawaite Shia sect of Islam, a minority that has elements of Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Gnosticism, and neo-Platonism. They were seen as heretics and faced massive backlash from Muslims and Christians throughout centuries. They celebrate Christmas, Easter, but also believe in reincarnation. They are a fascinating example of the ancient religious diversity in the Levant. There are also other faiths in this area like the Druze (George Clooney's wife). They are Muslims who celebrate Christmas and drink alcohol. Yazidis are another minority group. With the Levant, theres no race. Your identity and whats on your birth certificate is your religion. It all falls back to religion in the Levant (Jewish, Islam, Christianity, other faiths). Democracy cannot work when people are so religiously ideological and identify politics and their identity with their religion. Even in Israel it doesnt work. It all comes back to the religion. This is why the US version of democracy or majority rule cannot work in Syria or Iraq. The best version is not giving the country to religious ideologues which is what America just did. Secular dictators like Assad and Saddam were way better. Not the best, but way better than what the countries have now.
