Republicans and the debt ceiling

A clean bill? Or did they just pretend to pass something that raises the debt if we ignore that it cuts veterans benefits or some irresponsible bill-killing stuff like that?

Ah yes, let's let the Senate pass a clean spending bill or perhaps one that cuts military spending by 25%, gets rid of the Bush and Trump tax cuts, makes capital gains taxes for those making more than $400K equal to the income tax, and eliminate the cap on social security payments. We'd be rolling in revenue and be able to fund ALL of President's priorities.

Lastly, don't think for a sec that if the shoe is on the foot, that Democrats won't decide to flip the script next time the debt limit is reached. We default. We go into a recession. If Republicans win the white house, then Democrats will happily hold the debt ceiling hostage to their wish list of demands. Careful what you wish for, PP. That's why it's always been a clean bill in the past.

Yes, the bill cuts the VA by 22% and cuts a lot of other things that has nothing to do with the debt ceiling. If they want to negotiate a budget, that should be part of the budget process. This is paying bills already accrued.

They did. They were the adults in the room. The Republicans couldn't pass a clean bill without Democratic support in both the House and Senate. They've acted in good faith. I doubt that this will continue if the Republicans decide to breach the debt limit unless their ridiculous demands are met. In fact, the rational response would be to do the very same thing next time they are in power.

He’s just admitting what the GOP wants. They think if they collapse the economy it will help them in the next election.

Maybe they should run on these issues or at least poll test them.

Have the Dems ever done that (recently?) I seem to recall it being Republicans the ones to shut down the government, at least in the last 20 years.

The Democrats have never done any such thing. It’s always Republicans in Congress throwing tantrums because a Democrat is President.

Republicans like to pretend that money acquired is necessarily the same thing as money earned. Therefore taxes are bad, spending on things that make the country better are bad, and therefore tax cuts never have to be justified or paid for.

No, they've never done this. They've acted in good faith under Republican Presidents and passed clean debt resolutions. Every. Single. Time. However, if the Republicans want to hold the country hostage and play brinksmanship with the economy in exchange for its wishlist, who's to stop the Democrats from doing so the next time a Republican is in the White House? Why wouldn't they? I would think the gloves come off once it's clear that the Republicans no longer ever negotiate in good faith.

What's to stop them? The fact that they have actual ethics and morals and the GOP knows they wouldn't harm hundreds of millions of people just to get their way on fiscal policy.

It's like the standard comic book trope where the villain observes that the hero's love for ordinary people is his weakness.

Good question as they increased it three times under Trump!

Might not have much of a country left by the next election if that’s the plan.

Democrats somehow believe the government should function and that threatening to burn down the government and crash the economy is dangerously stupid.
