This whole thing has aged terribly for dems. They’re playing catch-up AND throwing stones at the same time. Very awkward place to be in.

Nope. Not comparable at all.

The D governors are just rolling back mandates. That’s not what Youngkin did. He told parents that they could ignore school rules. He illegally attempted to thwart local authority. That’s why there is a lawsuit. He overstepped his authority.

Plus, those other governors waited until after the surge because they aren’t flaming a-holes.

This is not true. Many of these states currently have higher case rates than they had 6 or 7 months ago and kept mandates in place.
It is political for them. Their focus groups and the polls are brutal and they need to do something to change the narrative.

Most of the mandates aren’t lifting until March/April.

Plus, kids 5-11 weren’t vaccinated 6 months ago.

So? Kids are at almost no risk of bad outcomes from this virus.
If this is what they are basing their decisions on (which they aren't), then they are not following the science.
And, the mandates are ending immediately in some of these states. NY, for example.
RI ends on Feb. 11. NJ and Connecticut ends theirs in a couple of weeks.

They are just lifting statewide mandates.

Not overriding local decisions by telling parents they can ignore school rules.

It doesn't matter. They are not doing this because of "science." They are doing it because of "political science."
They are late to the game. Glad they are seeing the light. But, let's be honest about why this is happening.

That's a cute line but it's now been overused. What, at least a half dozen times on DCUM in the last day?
Bottom line DOES remain that Dem governors waited until the omicron surge was in steep decline, so they did at least care about the data and the science.
Republican governors were anti mask during right in the midst of the worst part of it and didn't care one iota about the data and the science.
There is no "both sides" to it.

AND they didn’t tell parents they could ignore school rules.

Sure. That is why after the VA and NJ elections, they convened focus groups.

Still, the easing of New York’s pandemic restrictions on businesses comes as Democratic-led states from New Jersey to California have announced similar moves this week, in a loosely coordinated effort that is the result of months of public-health planning, back-channel discussions and political focus groups that began in the weeks after the November election.

The moves highlight how even local officials who installed sweeping safety measures early in the pandemic are now preparing to live permanently with the virus.

“This is not a declaration of victory as much as an acknowledgment that we can responsibly live with this thing,” Gov. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey, a Democrat who imposed some of the nation’s toughest pandemic-related mandates, said on Monday. Under Mr. Murphy’s new policy, which will take effect the second week of March, students and school employees in the state will no longer be required to wear masks.

Shortly after the New Jersey announcement on Monday, the Democratic leaders in California, Connecticut, Delaware and Oregon separately said they would also end some mask mandates.

Connecticut will permit students and staff members to stop wearing masks in schools by no later than Feb. 28; Delaware will end mask mandates in schools by March 31. Oregon and California announced the end to mask mandates at indoor public spaces.

After a scare in November, New Jersey’s governor and other Democratic leaders held back-channel talks over lifting mandates and helping voters impatient with restrictions reclaim a sense of normalcy.

It was Gov. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey who began the effort last fall, weeks after he was stunned by the energy of right-wing voters in his blue state, who nearly ousted him from office in what was widely expected to be an easy re-election campaign. Arranging a series of focus groups across the state to see what they had missed, Mr. Murphy’s advisers were struck by the findings: Across the board, voters shared frustrations over public health measures, a sense of pessimism about the future and a deep desire to return to some sense of normalcy.

But even Democratic voters, they agreed, were wearying of the toughest restrictions, growing increasingly impatient with mandates and feeling ready to live with the risk that remained.

Last week, they took their concerns to the White House. As members of the National Governors Association gathered for a meeting in the East Room, several asked President Biden to provide clear guidelines for their states to move from the crisis footing of a pandemic to a recognition that the virus was here to stay — and that it could be managed without completely upending daily life.

The administration’s guidance didn’t come quickly enough for Mr. Murphy, however. On Monday, he acted — without White House support — by announcing that New Jersey would no longer require students and school employees to wear masks, in defiance of the current recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I’m sure our government leaders do need to consider what the irrational mob may do (storm the stars house?) and balance that out with public health recommendations.

He did hold out though and waited until the 5-11 vaccine was available AND two surges have passed.

AND he didn’t take away school board authority for local mandates.

Breaking news: politicians use focus groups!

Do you think R politicians don't use focus groups? I'd bet Rs ran similar focus groups and capitalized on the public fatigue of the pandemic artificially prolonged by guess who - conservatives.

Have YOU taken a hard look around the entire country? What never ceases to amaze me is how arrogant and self absorbed DMV folks like you are. You think you know what is best for everyone based solely on the fact you live here. That is your credential. Your only one. Read a paper (not WaPo) and know that the rest of the country think you are the clown, with no doubt the same fat body and a cloth mask - just like the trashy woman screaming in the store.

This isn't about "the entire country" - it IS about the DMV (which includes Alexandria) since that's where Youngkin and the room he should've been reading is.

Want to know if masks and other mitigation work? Just look at the statistics. Virginia and DC are 41st and 43rd respectively in Covid deaths/million.

Hate to disappoint you, but I'm a 57-year-old, very fit woman who wears an N95 or KN95 when I go out because both my DH and I have medical conditions (that we were born with, BTW) that would make Covid challenging for us. And I pay attention to the science, like the new study showing that Covid infection can damage your cardiovascular system as much as smoking or obesity.

So there won't be a third surge? I have his promise on that?

Now you know that most people think you're a clown, but they're too polite to say it.

Minimal spread in VA schools? Wonder why...

80% vaccination rate? Higher in public jobs.

Not 80% in ESs.

Not 80% for boosted kids in MS/HS.

Of course, those Governors aren’t being attacked. And everyone has noticed that, whether they’ll admit it or not.

Focus groups and polls.

Exactly.

The D governors waited until after 5-11 vaccines were available and the surges (delta, omicron) are over.

Promise for what?

Are you so incredibly dysfunctional that you can’t handle uncertainty?
