Hayfield Football Coach Fired

Think Dunne & co. need to keep up the pressure that this "internal" investigation is worthless/waste of time and (most critically) will not be objective. And continue to insist that a firm UNRELATED to FCPS do a short, concise yet thorough investigation into the Hayfraud debacle. Only that will give FCPS community some confidence going forward.

I second this.

The players dedicated countless hours to improving their skills and representing their team, only to have their opportunity for success taken away due to decisions beyond their control. These young athletes simply followed the instructions given by the adults in charge, trusting in their leadership. It’s crucial that the consequences for this situation target the adults who caused the problems, not the players who are now unfairly bearing the brunt of the fallout.

This clears the way for Madison to the championship and the money spent by Hayfield parents goes down the drain because FCPS’ new collusion with the VHSL. The parents ought to sue FCPS now.

This! These Hayfield football players that were impacted by this should sue as well as the FCPS employees that were transferred.

Truly clueless and laughable!
Please record the lawyers reaction when presented with this, it will go viral.
Not PP here. There are two types of Hayfield players:pre-Overton and post-Overton. Pre-Overton has a legit beef, and rumors of bullying. Post-Overton participated in the fraud, so nothing for them.

How was the bullying handled? Was it reported? If it was reported, was there an investigation? I know plenty don’t report the incidents.

Didn’t it get addressed allowing them to move to other FCPS. Not saying it was properly investigated cause we see that’s not what FCPS does but something was done.

It must have been terrible bullying by the coaches and out of district players for rising seniors to request a transfer to another high school their senior year.

Those poor original Hayfield kids who had to transfer senior year over bullying.

I will watch, but Ricardo dropped the ball on this. He didn’t do his job. This is too little too late.

FCPS is too big & way too powerful. Most parents feel helpless fighting the bureaucracy. This has been the only scandal that seems to have pierced the armor. I think each of the 8(?) regions of FCPS should be an independent school district with their own superintendent and elected school board - perhaps they can have a contract with a central transportation office and other essential services like the City of Fairfax currently has with FCPS. That gives power back to the parents & taxpayers.

St Louis runs special ed as a city/county wide school district that serves all school districts, with everything else as dozens of small, independent school districts of 1-8 high schools each, with their own school boards and policies. It is a far better model than what FCPS does.

I emailed my SB rep as a Robinson parent. Highlighted my primary concerns not being the football itself but the horrific handling of the situation and the SB’s renewal of Reid’s contract more than a year early in the middle of her ham fisted attempts to make this all go away.

I got a clear cut and paste email doubling down on everything in response. See below:

Thank you for sharing your concerns about recent events involving high school athletics in Fairfax County. First and foremost, I am truly sorry for the angst caused to our community, and for the erosion of trust in our system.

All students should have equal access to every aspect of public education, including sports programs, and competition should be fair. I regret that there have been unfortunate impacts to many, including on students and families in the Braddock District. As a leader in the system, I take my responsibility seriously and am sorry for any negative results your child may have faced, including student athletes whose season was affected.

I appreciate your patience as I wanted Dr. Reid to have time to work through the initial aspects of an action plan to address the concerns and to engage in further talks with Virginia High School League (VHSL) Executive Director Dr. John Haun. As Dr. Reid stated in her Nov. 12 letter to the community, she and Dr. Haun “agree that the changing landscape of both high school and collegiate athletics will require new standards to be implemented to prevent situations like the one we’ve just encountered. I trust that there will be continuing collaboration with the VHSL as we prepare our programs - and our student athletes - for the future.”

Moving forward, it is vital that our practices and processes meet the needs of the changing reality of high school athletics. As a lawyer, I know that if it seems the letter of the law is not fulfilling the spirit of the law, then we need to examine and update that law. This is why I support Dr. Reid’s plan for a comprehensive, external, independent review to inform potential future policy and practice changes. This additional assessment will include the situation at Hayfield as part of the review of all FCPS transfer and eligibility practices.

Dr. Reid’s plan includes:

“A comprehensive and independent external investigation and review of all student athlete transfers and eligibility practices across all sports and in all of our high schools.
A review and revision, where necessary, to FCPS athletic protocols and procedures. Led by the Office of Student Activities and Athletics programs, and in partnership with coaches and administrators, this will include a divisionwide review of current practices in evaluating student athlete transfers both inside and outside of the Division.”

I am also dismayed that new information has come to light since the initial reviews in August and am monitoring these developments closely. The findings of the comprehensive review will be used to help us establish better policies and practices to prevent these types of situations in the future. I hope any subsequent changes to policy and practice will be good steps towards rebuilding public trust and lead to a better path forward.

Dr. Reid also will host two community conversations and I hope you will be able to participate. FCPS will share more about those meetings soon. Throughout this evolving situation, I have been in close communication about this with the Superintendent and Board colleagues and will continue to be as new developments arise.

Please see the statement from me and my colleagues regarding high school athletics.

Please continue to share your concerns about this or anything else with me at any time.

Warm regards,
Rachna

A Nike contract?!? for a public HS?

FCPS would have been asked to sign to waive conflict of interest, which they clearly did since he represented them. The school board needs to immediately move the work at Blankenship to another law firm as the firm should have known better than to even ask for waiver.

To be clear, Cafferty represented the Hayfield families that got the judge to delay the VHSL ruling and start the playoffs? Wouldn't Blankenship have also been involved in whatever excuse for an "internal investigation" FCPS did earlier this year when concerns about transfers/ recruiting were initially raised?
That's... not good.

Asra is biased.

Asra is thorough and has uncovered more than one scandal in FCPS, including FCPS releasing many of our kids' private information, then trying to hide this.

You don't have to be politically aligned with Asra to appreciate her investigative reporting skills.

Dismissing her because she is not team blue is not very smart.

New uniforms are expensive! Public HS teams need a LOT of uniforms and buy new sets very infrequently.

Asra is biased.

Yes, biased in favor of the facts of the matter of this case.
