Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
I second this. |
It must have been terrible bullying by the coaches and out of district players for rising seniors to request a transfer to another high school their senior year. Those poor original Hayfield kids who had to transfer senior year over bullying. |
I will watch, but Ricardo dropped the ball on this. He didn’t do his job. This is too little too late. |
|
BTW, I love this line: "marking the first resignation in a growing scandal..." Asra knows she's going to spill the dirt on everyone and is just biding her time... |
St Louis runs special ed as a city/county wide school district that serves all school districts, with everything else as dozens of small, independent school districts of 1-8 high schools each, with their own school boards and policies. It is a far better model than what FCPS does. |

I emailed my SB rep as a Robinson parent. Highlighted my primary concerns not being the football itself but the horrific handling of the situation and the SB’s renewal of Reid’s contract more than a year early in the middle of her ham fisted attempts to make this all go away.
I got a clear cut and paste email doubling down on everything in response. See below: Thank you for sharing your concerns about recent events involving high school athletics in Fairfax County. First and foremost, I am truly sorry for the angst caused to our community, and for the erosion of trust in our system. All students should have equal access to every aspect of public education, including sports programs, and competition should be fair. I regret that there have been unfortunate impacts to many, including on students and families in the Braddock District. As a leader in the system, I take my responsibility seriously and am sorry for any negative results your child may have faced, including student athletes whose season was affected. I appreciate your patience as I wanted Dr. Reid to have time to work through the initial aspects of an action plan to address the concerns and to engage in further talks with Virginia High School League (VHSL) Executive Director Dr. John Haun. As Dr. Reid stated in her Nov. 12 letter to the community, she and Dr. Haun “agree that the changing landscape of both high school and collegiate athletics will require new standards to be implemented to prevent situations like the one we’ve just encountered. I trust that there will be continuing collaboration with the VHSL as we prepare our programs - and our student athletes - for the future.” Moving forward, it is vital that our practices and processes meet the needs of the changing reality of high school athletics. As a lawyer, I know that if it seems the letter of the law is not fulfilling the spirit of the law, then we need to examine and update that law. This is why I support Dr. Reid’s plan for a comprehensive, external, independent review to inform potential future policy and practice changes. This additional assessment will include the situation at Hayfield as part of the review of all FCPS transfer and eligibility practices. Dr. Reid’s plan includes: “A comprehensive and independent external investigation and review of all student athlete transfers and eligibility practices across all sports and in all of our high schools. A review and revision, where necessary, to FCPS athletic protocols and procedures. Led by the Office of Student Activities and Athletics programs, and in partnership with coaches and administrators, this will include a divisionwide review of current practices in evaluating student athlete transfers both inside and outside of the Division.” I am also dismayed that new information has come to light since the initial reviews in August and am monitoring these developments closely. The findings of the comprehensive review will be used to help us establish better policies and practices to prevent these types of situations in the future. I hope any subsequent changes to policy and practice will be good steps towards rebuilding public trust and lead to a better path forward. Dr. Reid also will host two community conversations and I hope you will be able to participate. FCPS will share more about those meetings soon. Throughout this evolving situation, I have been in close communication about this with the Superintendent and Board colleagues and will continue to be as new developments arise. Please see the statement from me and my colleagues regarding high school athletics. Please continue to share your concerns about this or anything else with me at any time. Warm regards, Rachna |

Asra is biased. |
A Nike contract?!? for a public HS? |
To be clear, Cafferty represented the Hayfield families that got the judge to delay the VHSL ruling and start the playoffs? Wouldn't Blankenship have also been involved in whatever excuse for an "internal investigation" FCPS did earlier this year when concerns about transfers/ recruiting were initially raised? That's... not good. |
Asra is thorough and has uncovered more than one scandal in FCPS, including FCPS releasing many of our kids' private information, then trying to hide this. You don't have to be politically aligned with Asra to appreciate her investigative reporting skills. Dismissing her because she is not team blue is not very smart. |
| New uniforms are expensive! Public HS teams need a LOT of uniforms and buy new sets very infrequently. |
Exactly what I received from her. |
| OMG - more community conversations |
Yes, biased in favor of the facts of the matter of this case. |
