| I have recently discovered the workouts on the PopSugar app and like how they provide a variety so it's never boring. I've been doing the 10 minute workouts for about a week to help me build the habit and I hope to move to the 20 minute videos soon. I have very little time to formally exercise, so it's been doable. I'd like to lose about 5 pounds this month in anticipation of an event in the beginning of May. I eventually want to lose around 25 lbs, but that's a longer term goal. I'm currently 139 lbs and 5 feet tall. I've cut out processed food and have been eating clean. Will the 10/20 minute workouts be enough to help me see results? |
| Try t25. |
| Anything is better than nothing and there is lots of new research out suggesting that short workouts are a great option. Preferably several in a day but do what you can |
| Add in as much non-formal activity to your day as possible and keep up the good eating, which makes the biggest difference for me personally in terms of weight (but not tone, obviously). |
| If you have a specific goal in mind, you might want to step it up. Anything is better than nothing, but you might want to incorporate some other activity. |

Absolutely this is great! Especially if you are looking at going up to 20 minutes or more.
Just remember that the much bigger part of weight loss is eating, so healthy eating will probably be the bigger factor for you for weight loss. |
I have a Fitbit and average about 10,000 steps/day. I try to go for longer walks on the weekends. Any other suggestions for how to incorporate other activity? -OP |

10minutes is not going to go very far. If you want the best results for the least time investment, diet is where to focus.
Past that, anything is better than nothing. Goals are key to actually deciding what you need to do, otherwise it's kinda this aimless gray area |

Ten to twenty minutes isn't bad.
Just remember a big part of it is about intensity. I know some people who go as far as measuring their pulse rates and making sure that it stays within the range they want while working out. If you're doing a fitness program/app, I'm guessing that it's setup to make sure you're working out that entire time. Keep it up! |
+1 For your 5 pound goal, just look at your diet. That should come off easily with your time frame. |
| Not really. When it's warm out I will run a mile on my lunch break just because it's a quick, easy way to knock off some calories and break up the day. I'm ok with such a short duration because I already work out every morning. But I would in no way think it was a way to get me in shape or lose weight doing that alone. The intensity you would have to work at would be so high you would need time to recover and stretch in order not to injure yourself and to reap the benefits. And there isn't anyone that can't find more than 10 minutes in a day. Aim for 30 at a minimum. |
| I read one's body starts burning fat after about the 30 minute mark. So if you workout for 45 minutes, the last 15 are the most important in terms of fast burning. |

If that is all you are doing (10 minute workouts), then I don't think you are going to realize the real benefits of working out.
And in my mind, the biggest benefit isn't the weight loss/maintenance. The biggest benefit is the endorphin rush and then just the calm that comes from taking yourself through a build up of intensity, a steady intensity, and then a cool down. I just don't think you can get that in 10 minutes. 20 minutes is definitely better, but it has to be a really targeted 20 minutes. I would go with weights/strength training that works more than one muscle group at a time (total body) with short bursts of high-intensity cardio. That will get you the most bang for your buck. If you can stretch it to 30 or 40 minutes, then you'll really start to feel amazing. Best of luck. |
Oh, please, PP, just shut up! OP, 10 minutes a day is great! If you can do that, you are doing something for your body, and the more you do it, the easier it will be, and you'll find yourself sneaking two or more 10 minute workouts into your day every day. Even 10 minutes 3 times a week will begin to see results in your fitness. Not huge results, but you'll see improvements. As many PPs (except the one quoted above) have said, something is better than nothing. Keep at it, OP! |
It's been over a week since I've started my 10 minute workouts and I've been really enjoying them. The biggest thing for me is that I have no excuse to not do a 10 minute workout. I've done a variety on popsugar--from plyodance to tabata to yoga. My son saw me doing the yoga and joined in (he's 3) so I found some yoga videos for kids and we've done those together. I haven't seen any difference on the scale but I do feel better and all of the stretching has helped my back feel better. TMI, but I got my period today so I've been retaining water and hope to see at least a small difference on the scale next week. I also took my measurements so that I can begin tracking them. Like I said, I need to make this a daily habit and then increase the time. Yesterday and today I did my own 10 minute video and then a 20 minute video with my son. This weekend has been difficult to eat clean due to the holiday, but I've stuck with it. My diet really isn't all that bad usually-I just have to cut out snacking after dinner. I will never be the type to workout in the morning and then run a mile on my lunch break, so I have to find a plan that works for me. I just need to think that what I've been doing this week is better than what I was doing 2 weeks ago. Hopefully I'll start to see some results soon. Thanks to those who are cheering me on--I definitely need it! -OP |
