From a 1/18 post on the NorCal boards, looks like splitting U14 and U15 up:
"Posted on the Oregon forums. Not sure if it's legit, but wouldn't surprise me that it is. They seem to making this up as they go along. Academy Directors and Club Leaders: First off, thank you for your feedback. Since meeting in Chicago last month, your input has been instrumental in determining the next steps and planning future Academy programming. Specifically, your interest in adding additional age groups for the launch of the Girls’ Academy is aligned with the Academy philosophy for creating a clear player pathway. With an eye towards an improved everyday environment where players can continue to grow, the U.S. Soccer Girls’ Development Academy plans to split the U-14/15 age group into two single-aged teams at U-14 (2004) and U-15 (2003) for its inaugural season in 2017/18. The strategic initiative to increase the player pool at the younger Academy ages, is part of a long-term goal of expanding to single age groups in order to further develop female players. At the Girls’ Academy launch in Chicago on December 15th, the Academy sought feedback, input and questions in small-group settings from club presidents and Academy Directors. This plan to expand the base of the Academy structure addresses the topic most frequently discussed from the clubs. The Academy is aware that clubs may have questions surrounding the plan for expansion. Therefore, a webinar is scheduled on Thursday, January 19th at 1:00 pm CT for all Girls’ Academy Clubs. Topics such as Academy structure, travel, events, roster management, and budgets will be discussed. Please feel free to share this email with your club community as you plan for the year ahead. We look forward to next the webinar and to continue working with each of you and your club." |
The only negative drawback to this approach (if you can even call it that)--will be the player will be frozen out. The way soccer works in the DMV is type-A parents race to get their kids on the most 'elite, elite, ELITE teams' at the youngest of ages so that they don't suffer capacity issues later. Once a kid is in---unless he is such a royally, elite f*ck up-- he will not be bumped. The slots or openings get smaller and smaller and smaller and once these Academies invest in someone that don't dare admit they were wrong. This is what is ludicrous. Everyone knows you can't judge a player's future success at 12-14 years old. In this area, by 15 we consider players done. I really think it more beneficial to not be in this system because you are not limited to how and where you train. You can pick up so many different styles and individuality vs being a cog in somebody's machine and forced into a position young. |

Multiple Sports vs Specializing...
Is Specializing when you play one sport and ONLY one sport year round? When people talk about multiple sports, are they saying...for example, baseball and ONLY baseball in the spring, swimming and ONLY swimming in the summer, soccer in the fall, and basketball and only basketball in the winter? My kid plays soccer year round at least 3 days a week off season and 4 days a week in season. In the summer does swim team too. In the winter he plays basketball too. Those sports take "priority" in the off season but he still plays a lot of soccer even in the offseason between outdoor training and futsal. Would the experts say he specializes or a multi-sport kid? It's never been clear to me. |
To me that is multi sport. My kid does the same minus swimming on a team in the summer although he swims every day. Specializing to me is if you only did soccer all year round and nothing else. The number of days would probably increase but it would still be just that one sport. |
This has not been our experience at all, with the DA academies here or with the programs in the state we moved from. Kind of the opposite actually. Lots of kids get dumped from the HS DA age groups for better talent that comes from outside. Or they'll keep the old players around, but give them less/minimum playing time. I think it's fine to stay outside the DA system until HS if your kid is very talented and is receiving excellent training from somewhere else. The people who say you'll be frozen out or not invited to the DA tryouts if you do that don't know how the system works. All the DA clubs around here will be open to taking a look at a kid who is an impact player on whatever team he is currently playing for. These kids will usually be able to come to several practice sessions and then they'll be "invited" come to try outs if the coach thinks they have potential. Be wary of people who talk about how the system is rigged, etc. Many of them either overestimate their kids' abilities or give up without doing their due diligence on DA or other options. |
That sounds like multisport to me. |
I think age 14/15 is when the kids that have always are on the top teams get a rude awakening. There are many, many kids for whatever reasons (drive time, late bloomer, private training) that burst onto the scene later in this sport. Often--it was the variety of their training and play that turns them into that player in the mid-teen years. Of course, puberty also accounts for a great deal of change in abilities. The ones that relied on physical traits young have a really rough time when those that relied on skill have their bodies catch up. |
I would love to hear it also, I bet they are not happy to lose BRYC. I did notice on the CCL webpage they have removed any reference to CCL next gen, maybe that isn't happening now either ? |
Huh? Where did you read BRYC was leaving CCL? |
There was an article in soccerwire said they are joining ECNL boys and girls. It did not specifically state but you have to assume that is where they will move their A teams, no ? |
So what. McLean is in both ECNL and CCL. |
|
BRYC has 1 team at most age groups above 12? With that being said I believe they won't be in CCL.
Big loss for CCL if they are out |

Mclean's teams that play in CCL are B teams. BRYC has had its A team in CCL. No comparison between those two. |
