Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Why wouldn’t you want to come to Chantilly? The commute is so much better! |
But if you look at the maps, Skyview boundary appears to be bigger than the Carson boundary under Scenario 2. |
Select the "Existing Conditions" scenario on the boundary tool and then select the Oakton boundary and you will see the 103%. |
| Who is going to break it to Oakton parents that no one cares about Oakton. Two of my three kids are in tippy top colleges and we’re not at Oakton. The mania is pathetic, either you go to slightly richer school like Oakton and your kid gets a bit lost in the mix of you go to another school and your kids the resident genius. Ask TJ kids how college admissions work out for them (poorly as graphed against performance). Famous words- it’s all relative. |
Because they’re built around a Carson capacity where it receives 300 AAP transfers from Franklin. AAP center middle schools are going away and whatever perfect balance these consultants are trying to achieve is going to blow up leaving Franklin, Stone, and Liberty over capacity and Carson, Rocky Run, and Hughes under enrolled. |
I agree with this with regards to academics, extracurriculars, and sports and even college acceptances. If your kid is just above the rest but not near the top, they wont stand out. It can be very competitive. |
If they went to Oakton they would probably be lucky to get into top 50, the competition is just better than at the surrounding schools. It can be very stressful, you feel like you have to do all this extra work just to get into a state school. |

From a BTDT parent of graduating senior athlete, for the people crying about smaller schools not being competitive in sports:
You know what’s even better than being on a winning team? Being on a team at all! More and smaller high schools give more kids opportunities to participate. |
Is scenario 2 where part of Dogwood goes to Carson? It appears that scenario 3 middle school should be with scenario 2 high school. Is this an error by the consultant? |
That was odd but I think they are just trying to fill capacity at Carson. |
Why wouldn’t they fill that capacity with Oak Hill though? |
Not everyone is driven by sports. Many people could care less about that. |
| Scenarios 1&3 got slammed in the community meeting, fyi. Almost everyone agreed Scenario 2 was best. Also, Kyle MacDaniel said he would fix the Lees Corner issue. He knows they are pissed off about getting moved to Westfield HS. They are too close to Chantilly to be moved. |
This. My kid loves STEM, doesn't play sports and lives near Skyview. We knew the school would be small, although we heard something last night that the ratio of 9th graders to 10th graders for next year is currently 3 to 1. |
First they send a bunch of Dogwood kids to Hunters Mill. Then they turn both Dogwood and Hunters Mill into imbalanced split feeders between Hughes and Carson. Then they send them all to South Lakes anyway. Scenario 1 and 3 also tweak the boundaries between Forest Edge and Sunrise Valley, which seems really inappropriate. The comprehensive boundary review is over. They need to be focusing on the areas actually impacted by the new high school. |
