Does anyone know the status of the Proposed BASIS Expansion

I'm told that their campus features strong and stable leadership, decent facilities and ECs (including good instrumental music lessons at school and a competitive orchestra), low teacher turnover and a high retention rate of students through 12th grade. That's not what we found at BASIS DC.

She just cuts and pastes her previous comments.

Her kid dropped out many years ago but it obviously still burns.

You again? If anybody’s cutting and pasting, it’s you. If you don’t have anything to add to an importatnt discussion, go away.

As a fellow BASIS parent, just coming here to say that these kinds of posts are not a good look.

Who cares about good looks and other petty issues? We're here for a discussion about the proposed BASIS elementary school expansion. Might be worth taking a harder look at why BASIS DC hasn't done as well as the franchise's schools in Arizona and Texas. Presumably, an elementary school would be just another weak link.

If the elementary school won't turn out any better than what we've got for 5th-12th, I hope the proposal dies soon.

There are lots of complaints about middle school attrition in the Arizona schools as well. But maybe those are out of date and the elementary school lowered this? Hard to find anything with very recent numbers.

BASIS DC is by all objective measures one of the or the top school in DC. Seems a weird thing to argue that because it isn't as good as Arizona BASIS schools it shouldn't be allowed to open. Make it make sense...

Sure. BASIS should bring their best quality to DC, just like they do (or claim to do) in other states. There's no reason they shoudn't provide the same quality of teachers, administrators, and programming to our kids that they're providing to other kids.

They can’t make it make sense.

What does this post mean? There must be many reasons that BASIS isn't bringing the same quality of teachers, administrators and programming to DC kids as they do to Arizona students. I've visited a few of the AZ campuses for work, observing that they bear little resemblance to the DC branch. The campuses I saw were much larger and roomier, with playing fields, good music and art rooms, libraries, stages and so forth. I met administrators and senior teachers who'd been at the same BASIS campus for many years. AZ students can start BASIS in any grade, so don't get the massive attrition the DC school features. Just no comparison to the DC program.

Unhelpful annecdata. You obviously don’t work at Basis or have a kid there.

Basis internally compares the performance of all the Basis schools and Basis DC ranks near the top.

That ranking of Basis DC compared to the other Basis schools is similarly reflected in the USNWR rankings.

And there is plenty of attrition at the AZ schools, as you can easily determine by looking at the AZ charter data.

Plus many of the AZ schools are in the burbs not in an urban downtown. So, your point that they are “larger and roomier” than Basis DC simply reflects their locations. Maybe visit some schools in Manhattan or Brooklyn next time.

New poster with a kid at BASIS and much younger sibs. If the BASIS ES comes to be without a halfway decent playground, good music or art room, library, stage and so forth, we won't bother. I won't be surprised if that's the campus BASIS has in mind. BASIS can rank the new ES #1 in their system for all we care. Buildings that aren't good for kids are what's unhelpful. We rejected Two Rivers for that reason.

We have had a good experience at basis. Much of the loss is just people moving, as they focus on new starts in grade 5. They don’t generally add new students in later years. I am very thankful for the school.

Overall many negative unfair comments on here

You revived an 8-month-old thread to make this unenlightening remark?

If anyone actually wants to know, here's the BASIS DC board website. https://bdcschools.org/about-basis-dc/notice-of-public-meetings/ As you'll see, they only meet quarterly and are very late in posting public minutes, so anyone who hopes for information is out of luck.
