Who cares about good looks and other petty issues? We're here for a discussion about the proposed BASIS elementary school expansion. Might be worth taking a harder look at why BASIS DC hasn't done as well as the franchise's schools in Arizona and Texas. Presumably, an elementary school would be just another weak link. If the elementary school won't turn out any better than what we've got for 5th-12th, I hope the proposal dies soon.
BASIS DC is by all objective measures one of the or the top school in DC. Seems a weird thing to argue that because it isn't as good as Arizona BASIS schools it shouldn't be allowed to open. Make it make sense...
Sure. BASIS should bring their best quality to DC, just like they do (or claim to do) in other states. There's no reason they shoudn't provide the same quality of teachers, administrators, and programming to our kids that they're providing to other kids.
What does this post mean? There must be many reasons that BASIS isn't bringing the same quality of teachers, administrators and programming to DC kids as they do to Arizona students. I've visited a few of the AZ campuses for work, observing that they bear little resemblance to the DC branch. The campuses I saw were much larger and roomier, with playing fields, good music and art rooms, libraries, stages and so forth. I met administrators and senior teachers who'd been at the same BASIS campus for many years. AZ students can start BASIS in any grade, so don't get the massive attrition the DC school features. Just no comparison to the DC program.
Unhelpful annecdata. You obviously don’t work at Basis or have a kid there. Basis internally compares the performance of all the Basis schools and Basis DC ranks near the top. That ranking of Basis DC compared to the other Basis schools is similarly reflected in the USNWR rankings. And there is plenty of attrition at the AZ schools, as you can easily determine by looking at the AZ charter data. Plus many of the AZ schools are in the burbs not in an urban downtown. So, your point that they are “larger and roomier” than Basis DC simply reflects their locations. Maybe visit some schools in Manhattan or Brooklyn next time.
