Is it really so wrong to have one school in the charter system that is popular with kids from all Wards and of all income levels (including upper) who want accelerated math and science work? When there are many in the system that do very well with lower income students (DC Prep and KIPP)? And to realize that kids are coming from literally all over, including Ward 3 and Ward 6, and that they need to be centrally located? And have priority spots set aside for at-risk kids who want to go, too? |
It is if you're constantly claiming "pure lottery". Oh wowwww wards 3 and 6. God's gift to low income kids, BASIS is. |
Penn Quarter is centrally located and close to all the metro lines so accessible to kids coming from all over the city. Dupont less so. Congress Heights is not at all. |
Please identify some real estate properties in BASIS' target area that BASIS can afford. |
Congress Heights lol. |
Dupont cannot reasonably described as central to students in DC. |
This. You could more easily make the case for Metro Center or L'Enfant Plaza on transit. |
I would love for DCPCSB to call BASIS equity bluff and make their opening contigent on taking the Eagle Congress heights space. The one at buzzards is much much much too small. |
I thought part of the issue was it's actually owned by DCPS and on lease to Eagle? |
It is a nice campus — it even has a pool. |
The same mechanism eagle would have used to transfer the lease to friendship would be available to basis. |
From listening to the PCSB meeting, I wasn't super clear on it, but I think it would have required DCPS or DGS to agree. Which they might have done in an emergency, but BASIS is not an emergency. |
If basis wanted the school I think they have enough pull to get it, though there might be pressure on dcps to instead use it as a swing space. But I don't think basis wants it. They don't want to run a school with a lot of kids who have experienced generational poverty, and they probably aren't good at doing so. It would just be an interesting move for the school board to make. It would spare them needing to vote against basis if they can say they were willing to approve them at that location and the school withdrew. |
Dupont Circle is literally 3 metro stops to BASIS DC on the red line. |
There are 60 BASIS schools in the US and only one (BASIS DC) doesn't have K-4.
Time for PCSB to rectify this gap. |
