Does anyone know the status of the Proposed BASIS Expansion

Did they? What are those Eagle kids going to do with school starting in a week?!

They're not closing Eagle yet, so probably just ride out the year? Definitely in a death spiral.

It just surprises me because the PCSB seemed very open to the acquisition at the prior meeting. And they've approved similar deals for Friendship in the past.

Seemed the same to me as well - especially once the PCSB staff put out a memo recommending that the charter board vote to approve. But during the denial vote discussion, the PCSB charter board members expressed that they felt Eagle wouldn't get sufficient consequences and that the acquisition was happening too quickly to ensure all stakeholders could weigh in and be informed. Reasonable concerns except that the timing could have been much better if Eagle had gotten scrutiny and consequences earlier.

Anyone heard scuttle on where BASIS plans to place the elementary school between the two locations in their materials?

Well now they could use one of the eagle academy spaces that just became vacant. My guess is they will want the one on buzzard point and will use some vague language about proximity to (the navy yard portion of) ward 8 rather than lease the one that is actually in ward 8...

I'm not sure those are big enough, but maybe could be with renovations.

Of course their idiotic consultant report that recommended a Dupont location means they can't possibly be expected to locate in a low-income area.

Basis looked to see what locations would best serve households for students the school is likely to attract, and is focusing on Dupont Circle and Penn Quarter.

-Both locations are convenient for lots of students who would be interested and for families that already have students at the school. Dupont Circle is convenient for north-central DC families and Penn Quarter is convenient for Capitol Hill
-Both locations are easily accessible by metro and multiple bus lines
-Both locations are easily accessible to the current middle/high school
-Both locations have multiple adjacent businesses

This map is 6 years old but gives a sense of where Basis students commute to school from:

And oh so wealthy but that's just a coincidence.

Oooh multiple adjacent businesses... What? Why would that matter?

BASIS kids commute in from all 8 Wards, and there is currently a culture of using public transit. Of course they want to find a central location.

Riiiiight and the wealth of the area is purely coincidental.

What are you trying to say?

Those also aren’t elementary aged kids. Most of them take public transit without parents.

I'm trying to say that choice of location, both now and in the past, is part of how BASIS shapes its student body to avoid having a lot of low-income students.

I believe the Congress Heights campus can accommodate over 600 kids and it has a library, indoor pool, STEAM room, and more. It was renovated in 2014: https://www.eagleacademypcs.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=752643&type=d&pREC_ID=1160364 It's 0.6 miles from the metro. I would love to see the PCSB tell BASIS that they can expand if they locate there...there was clearly some demand for charter elementary there.
