Women’s World Cup

You're placing blame on things that have nothing to do with soccer. The players are not average. Many are among the best in the world. It just so happens that their coach has proven over the last two major tournaments to be unqualified and clueless in both tactics and roster construction.

I disagree. The player selection was horrible! They had 4 years to bring in new players and they brought in 4. They didn't trust the young girls but they put in players that obviously weren't in form. I'd rather have a young player make a mistake then an old player make one.

What do you think "roster construction" means?

Hmmm the only one I was truly impressed by was T Rodman. My favorite player is Rose Lavelle. Beyond both, nobody else impressed. And the old guard even sucked. I think the coach was at fault but the entire organization failed.

I'm not sure that I enjoy the approach of US soccer as others have noted. As much as I'd love to cheer for US, they don't play soccer the right way lol. I love the Dutch style of play but they need to have a bit more aggressiveness and if so, I think they will win it all. I honestly don't know that the UD had been that much better all these years as much as other countries weren't serious about women's soccer. Title IX happened years ago and with it came the momentum in US. But other than being in the sport, not sure we really understand the refinement and how beautiful the sport can be. I see the US approach to playing soccer as one of how to play kickball effectively. I hate to put it like that but it's the truth - all the clubs know is this.

DP if you were picking an all star team out of this World Cup how many Americans players would you have? After watching the other teams I just do not know how many American players I would select. There is a lot of bias towards the American players because most people in the US do not follow the European leagues(or soccer). That player for Colombia Linda Caicedo is 18 and outstanding. That la croqueta she used to score against Germany was beyond her years. She plays in Liga F for Real Madrid.

The other goalies, forwards, midfielders and defenders look better vs the US players. Don’t get me wrong some US players would make the team but not more than 3. There are more players from the European leagues vs NWSL at this World Cup. Two of the better US players play in Europe- Horan and Catarina Macario

As for the coach. Yes I would have picked a different mix of players but the US players selected for this World Cup are what they are. They are not going to become a high skilled, technical play team that can play a different styles/formations based on the opponent. They were selected to play the American way- athletic, strong, physical players who will out running the other teams. The team is not good at passing or possession, in negative space or breaking down defenses. It’s more of a club approach vs a World Cup approach to a roster.

I do not think all this was the coach. This was the best style for the majority of the US players and all the players were selected because they excel in this style of play. They created chances but did not finish. Maybe it was age, better coaching or better players on the other team play a factor?

Hopefully she matured from this world cup. cannot get two yellows even if the calls were marginal, need to know how to not put yourself and the team in that position.

How can you say that when youngsters aren’t even getting a chance! Ridiculous younger players weren’t tapped and some of those who were didn’t get ANY minutes!

The US women/girls youth national teams have won one knock out game from 2012 to present.

She is 28 and will be 32 next World Cup. She is most likely done. She fits the profile of a players that do not have super long careers- smaller, relies on speed/quickness and injury proned. She will have to change her game but she plays in the NWSL.
