Lets narrow this down. The US is not responsible for identifying and developing talent, hiring coaches and scouts, etc. The USSF is the governing body for that. So lets start there. They picked the players and coaching staff. |
Youngsters not getting a chance is an overstatement. Fox is 25. Smith is 22. Demelo is 25. Thompson is 18. Rodman is 21. Girma is 23. Sanchez is 24. Sanchez is the only one you can argue didn't get a chance. Next fewest minutes was Thompson who didn't show a lot in her admittedly limited time, but she was still out there with chance to show she wasn't overwhelmed but didn't. Among our injuried players are Swanson (25) and Macario (23) who might be 2 of our best players. So there are plenty of younger players selected, all but Sanchez got some time, and 2 more who almost certainly would have made the team and started if not injured. That doesn't even consider that Dahlkemper, Sauerbraun, and Sam Mewis, two of which would have been sitting right near their prime in Mewis & Dahlkemper at 30 and provided additional options, but wouldn't fall in the "young" category, although aren't exactly old either. |

Olympics is next major competition, so they will have to lean youth with u-23 squad with 3 over age players allowed. This may be hard since only 3 players from this currnet WC team would be on the roster.
Thompson 18, Rodman 21, and Smith 22 3 overage players I would take would be Swanson 25, Girma 24, and Macario 23 but US Federation will probably want Horan and Lavellle, wouldn't be too upset with those two but over these first three, I don't know? You see the dilemma that USWNT team was not that young nor that old for the current WC, pretty average, the players it lacked were those players in there prime, 24-28. If we do things right in the next cycle, take the olympics serioulsy we will have a TEAM of players in their prime come the next world cup. Who's your best 11 if WC qualifying started now? ---------Murphy--------- Fox, Cook, Girma, Dunn ------Sulli----Horan----- ----------LaVelle--------- Smith, Macario, Swanson |
| This cycle was a disaster and USSF will double down - because they think it was a fluke. |
The US needs players like Danielle van de Donk. Central midfielder - quick, strong, good on the ball and technically sound. One of the best players on the Dutch team and for me, one of the prototypes of what a modern CM needs to be like. Passing, pressing, positional sense and the ability to receive the ball under pressure and play it 1-2 touches short or long. She is 32 currently, was one of the best players of the last WC, and still going strong. Are there players like that coming through the youth system in the US? You bet there are, or players with the potential to be so. The thing is, they are usually not spotted early enough and developed. As they don't "stand out" in youth soccer fields in the obvious ways that coaches are looking for. They aren't necessarily faster, stronger or better athletes than others. They are also not the ones in youth soccer who are dribbling past multiple players and scoring goals or assists. Instead, they are likely to play smart, efficient and make others around them become better. Even someone like Lavelle, who is NOT the classic CM but more of a #10, was discovered by pure chance at a relatively older age of 18 suggests that she (and many others) might be falling through the cracks of the system. |
There are girls in the US youth system like that but they are not valued. Most quit because the coaches have no idea what to do with them. If you are a girl who is think 3-4 passes out and your teammate receives the ball, turns, head down and dibbles. It is very frustrating. Barcelona has the best women’s midfielders player in the world right now. None of them would have gotten a lot of playing time in ECNL, received any call ups or been heavily recruited by colleges. I watch a lot of women college soccer. I have many times seen a no name school play a t20 school. The t20 team’s starters all have great resumes and ECNL/travel awards. Consistently I leave the game think that girl/woman on that no name team was the best player on the field. |
These are the eligibility rules for men only. The women's tournament has never been age-restricted, at least not for the last few decades. |
Yep on the men’s side the Olympics is not a big deal. The women’s is like the World Cup but with a much smaller field of teams. There is talk about moving the World Cup to every two years. |
|
I vote for getting rid of Olympics soccer (nobody cares) and moving the World Cup (both men and women) to every 2 years and dropping the regional cups (Euro etc).
|
No, horrible idea. Don't cheapen the World Cup. It's supposed to be special. |
| Perhaps interestingly, there are 54 U.S.-born players in the World Cup this year who were representing other countries. Including half of Jamaica's team. |
US Women are the Brazil of the women's game. I love it! I think its the greatest contribution the US has made to many of these countries, export their soccer talent back to them build the game globally |
Oops my fault. So any roster predictions for the world cup? Whole pool available to pick from now |
Huh |
Perhaps they picked the wrong players for the US team? |
