You're placing blame on things that have nothing to do with soccer. The players are not average. Many are among the best in the world. It just so happens that their coach has proven over the last two major tournaments to be unqualified and clueless in both tactics and roster construction.
DP if you were picking an all star team out of this World Cup how many Americans players would you have? After watching the other teams I just do not know how many American players I would select. There is a lot of bias towards the American players because most people in the US do not follow the European leagues(or soccer). That player for Colombia Linda Caicedo is 18 and outstanding. That la croqueta she used to score against Germany was beyond her years. She plays in Liga F for Real Madrid. The other goalies, forwards, midfielders and defenders look better vs the US players. Don’t get me wrong some US players would make the team but not more than 3. There are more players from the European leagues vs NWSL at this World Cup. Two of the better US players play in Europe- Horan and Catarina Macario As for the coach. Yes I would have picked a different mix of players but the US players selected for this World Cup are what they are. They are not going to become a high skilled, technical play team that can play a different styles/formations based on the opponent. They were selected to play the American way- athletic, strong, physical players who will out running the other teams. The team is not good at passing or possession, in negative space or breaking down defenses. It’s more of a club approach vs a World Cup approach to a roster. I do not think all this was the coach. This was the best style for the majority of the US players and all the players were selected because they excel in this style of play. They created chances but did not finish. Maybe it was age, better coaching or better players on the other team play a factor?
