I've always been a generous tipper (hair salons, sit-down restaurants, uber drivers, etc.), but agree that tipping for takeout food or coffee is out of hand. But I'm a sucker and generally do tip. It gets tricky when you frequent your favorite local coffee shop or bakery, get to know the workers, etc.
What is most irritating are the takeout dining spots that, in addition to asking for a tip, charge a convenience fee for using the app. So, I place my order on the app & prepay, get in my car, drive to the place, find parking, grab my food from the counter, never speak to or otherwise use the time of one employee (other than the one who prepared my food), but I'm charged for this? Plus, a tip is expected. Ridiculous. |
Wrong my sister was a hostess in college 20 years ago. She’s the one who told me I need to tip on takeout. |

Not my problem. The business can pay them more and just include it in the price. If they employers are not willing to pay employees enough they can just go out of business. It is not my responsibility to tip (which is a complete scam). Many businesses do not even give employees any of the tips and they are not legally obligated to do so in any state except California. |
+1. Not tipping on coffee or any other takeout and if an employee is aggressive I will write management. This is a management expectation problem not a customer problem |
No it’s not. The chef has to plate or package, throw it in a bag with utensils and done. It’s part of paying for the food. No tip. |

Different types of food need different types of containers! Food needs to be packaged differently (vs how it’s plated and served at the restaurant) so it will still be edible and not soggy when you get home! Hot and cold foods should not be stacked on top of each other! Etc, etc. It’s so annoying that people think any sort of food service work is easy, unskilled labor. I’m not telling you to tip, but when you get takeout that’s packaged like sh*t and it ruins your meal, you understand that there is a modicum of planning and process for doing it right. |

I don't think anyone is saying that. We just expect the company that hired you to pay for that work and bake that cost into the order price. We don't think our accountants are unskilled either when they do our taxes, but we don't tip them, do we? |
