Half shirts to high school!

Watch Pen15. There’s a whole hilarious episode about the thong/low-rise jeans combo.

So many pearl-clutchers on this thread! I was also in HS in the early 00s and partook of the low-rise pants + thong sticking out trend. And we paired them with midriff-baring tops (bonus points for a pierced belly button). Loose high-waisted pants with crop tops that show a sliver of (upper) midriff are definitely modest compared to what we wore.

Ask your DD if it's against her school's dress code (or check the handbook yourself). If it's not, and it's what she wants to wear, let her have at it.

(Of course, if it's not what she wants to wear, definitely buy her some other shirts! PPs are right that you can find whatever you want online, you are not limited to what's in the stores)

"System-Wide Dress Code Including School Uniforms

Students attending Prince George’s County Public Schools should dress appropriately and in a way that is consistent with learning being a priority. Pajamas are not appropriate attire for students attending the online campus.

Head Dress
Head dress can be worn indoors for religious or health reasons only.

Shirts and Blouses
Shirts and blouses should be continuous from neckline to waist. The mid-section should never be visible. Tank tops and muscle
shirts are not allowed. Clothing with vulgar language, obscene pictures, weapons, drugs/alcohol or drug paraphernalia and tobacco products are not allowed. Identifiable gang/crew clothing or paraphernalia are not allowed. Sheer clothing is not allowed.

Skirts, Dresses and Shorts
Skirts, dresses, and shorts are no shorter than students’ fingertips when arms are hanging straight down at their sides.

Pants
Pants should be worn and secured at the waist. Pants should not be worn below the waist exposing undergarments.
Tights, stretch pants, leggings and spandex body suits must be worn with clothing long enough to cover the buttocks.

Shoes:
Shoes must be worn"

The question was about HS. You are talking about MS. Our MCPS MS had the same dress code that yours has. But HS does not.

I’ll take bare midriffs over the rules at a friend’s kids’ school in the Deep South. Boys wear pretty much what they want, but girls have a laundry list of rules including shirt hems must be no shorter than fingertip length (with arms down at sides) if your pants have no back pockets. Pictures of those poor girls at that school are ridiculous. It’s the Dugger like philosophy that girls are responsible for boys’ actions and attractions.

Put a shirt on!

I have sports bras that are basically tank tops.

Meanwhile, I want my kids' teachers to focus on teaching, not on what girls may or may not be wearing in class.

These are not tanks. So maybe try parenting a bit.

Evidently our definitions of "parenting" are different. So, here's how it works.

1. I have my say over my kids' clothes.
2. You have your say over your kids' clothes.
3. Teachers and schools focus on education, not girls' clothing fashions.

My 8th and 12th graders both wear them but more so the 8th grader. I cringe a little bit I wore them all the time when I was younger. As long as they aren’t wearing short shorts AND crop tops, I’m fine with it. They are usually wearing baggy jeans or sweatpants.

+1. Don't let your kid where them to school if it bothers you. jfc

It doesn’t bother me. But I don’t want her to wear them if they’re considered inappropriate. I am 100% clueless about fashion and always have been, and so is she, for the most part.

I am a high school teacher. Many girls do wear them but I absolutely find them inappropriate. But, they are no longer banned under the dress code. Some are practically sports bras. I am surprised that parents are letting their kids dress like this for school.

Huh? NO!

We were driving through College Park yesterday and it was pretty entertaining to see almost-totally-naked girls walking around. No high-wasted jeans, just super teeny shorts and shirts that are smaller than a bra.
Well, at least, they are legally adults. For high schoolers - and especially middle-schoolers- that is a no go. I would not let my 8th grader go to school looking like that. That's the hill I'm willing to die on. Judge away.

I’m fine we dd wearing longer cropped shirts (not skintight) with high rise bottoms. For me, it’s no big deal if when she raises her arms you can see a sliver of stomach. I don’t buy her tops that are cropped really high to the point that they look like bra tops. She’s able to find plenty of fashionable options that we both like.

Cropped tops have been around for a long time (seriously ... google "1950s midriff top") and the ones of today tend to show a lot less than the ones from the 1990s. I'm tired of rules that regulate female bodies.

Well, my boys have to wear a coat and tie and belt with shirts tucked in, so no crop tops for them either. Not even a tuckless button down.

My HS daughter wears sports t-shirts (nike, adidas) and running/denim shorts most of the time. Most of her friends wear the same thing, specially her teammates (she plays lacrosse and basketball for her HS). Winter is the same but sweats/jeans and add a hoodie. She does have a few friends who wear very short tops. But from what I gather, comfortable, loose clothing is more what girls wear in her HS. If you are ok with the outfits your daughter wants to wear, then let her pick her clothes. If not, let her know that you are not comfortable with certain styles. My daughter does have a few cropped tops that she wears when she goes out with friends, but always pairs them with high cut bottoms and a hoodie on top.

If teens want to wear something because it is the style or they have outdoor PE in 90+ degree weather, it >GASP< might not be they are trying to be trashy????!! Men take off their shirts in 50 deg weather JUST to try and attract women and nobody calls them trashy. Also, you should read the data about Vitamin D and covid, not to mention rickets and osteomalacia. Pay the medical bills of the midriff baring from 10am-2pm if you find them so "trashy". I bet you're fat and cottage cheesy and that's why belittling GIRLS and not men is your only hobby.

Ok, Kim.
