Adding women to the draft?

Anonymous
Female veteran.

If we ever had a draft, yes women should be included. We should also register as men currently do for Selective Service.

Are there the same societal problems in the military? Yes.

Equal opportunity starts in the duffel bag line, pay is not based on gender, neither are promotions.

Why are we even talking about a draft?

Thank you for your service! I agree with this even though I personally would not want to have been in it. I think it's only fair if we want equal rights. Israel does it.

I’m all for it when I get equal pay.
I’m all for it when the military can prove that my daughter won’t be assaulted and harassed while serving.
TIA

Military pay is equal for genders. Harassment laws have been toughened up. Good to go.

No. You want all women to serve, all women need equal pay. No more undervaluing “the work of women”.

equal pay in the military. vigorous anti - harassment rules.

+1. And if we did, I would college/grad school/PHD my kid out until they aged out. Or have them sign up for JAG or something.

One doesn't just "sign up for JAG."

Yep the draft deferment is no longer a thing. Your kid in college/grad school would have same chances as the high school drop out. The drafted do not have the option to pick their MOS. Most will go to combat units as replacements.

A. There will never be a draft.
B. If there were going to be one, you could enlist to something safe ahead of time. But it matters not because - see above.

Shorter version — so others will do the fighting?

Not sure we’ll ever need a draft given drones, cyber warfare, and robotics. We can all just sit back and watch Netflix while our technological superiority wins any future wars … except eventually the war against our own country by our leaders but I’ll be long dead by then.

China deterrence. The thing they have going for them is manpower. And we just doubled our capability.

Agree. Equal rights are coming with equal responsibilities. So yes, women should be included in the draft

Because we still have the Selective Service requirements

This is an absurd and self serving position. Do all men get "equal pay"? What does that even mean to you? The second point is also ridiculous. You did your daughter's current profession or school give you proof that she wouldn't be harassed or assaulted before she began? I bet not.

Look you want a societal good? Then society needs to put up or shut up.
There is nothing absurd about “women’s work” being intrinsically undervalued. I work in the arts and live it every day.
Thr military’s record of treatment of women is horrendous. They can clean their house, if they want to welcome women in.
Also, you equated forced service to a choice of employment and education.
Women get to choose a campus they feel safe on. They can leave a job if harassed.
Your comparison is ridiculous.

Strongly disagree. Equal rights should mean that NO ONE signs up for selective service. There will not (and absolutely should not) be another draft.

I guess my question is, why shouldn't women be drafted?

I'm a women, btw.

I mean, biologically speaking it does make sense. From a reproductive standpoint, women are simply more “valuable” than men. The average woman can have approximately one baby per year, the average man can father… I dunno, approaching infinity we’ll say just for the purpose of making the point. Additionally, women are fertile for a relatively short period of time in their lives, men remain fertile significantly longer.

Note that I am not arguing whether or not this logic should still be the determining factor over which young people are selected as the cannon fodder of the rich and powerful, I am merely pointing out that there absolutely IS a reason, historically, that women are typically exempt from this task.

Wanna get white wealthy Republicans opposed to overseas military adventures? Send their precious sorority daughters to Iraq to dig a ditch or clean the latrine as part of the draft.

I actually think our all-volunteer military allows politicians to be much more reckless with soldiers' lives. Too many Americans are apathetic and not paying attention because it doesn't really affect them.

I honestly would make a mandatory military draft for every American for two years after high school. Allow combat force to be all-volunteer, but force everyone to serve. You see a radical change in how Americans view foreign policy, the MIC, budgets for military, care for vets, etc.

This is offensive on so many levels. Do you hear yourself?

Women shouldn’t be drafted because it already sucks to be a woman. This is like the only benefit. Obviously women CAN enlist. But not forcing women to enlist is one of the FEW benefits of being a woman. Insisting on it implies that men and women are totally equal otherwise in our society and that is not the case.

So then you don't really want equality, you just want personal benefits.

Of course most women I know are more equipped to serve than the men I know.

Also, WTF do they have to "register"... everybody has a SSN, as soon as they turn 18 why isn't it automatic. Geez, we are so backwards.
