Adding women to the draft?

Anonymous
I’m opposed. I mean I don’t want any of my kids drafted because they could die. I can’t do anything about my son (law has been on books for decades) but why the sudden interest in “equality”? I don’t want that kind of “equality.” Let’s start with equal pay and reproductive rights. Btw, if one of my daughters wanted to serve I would support her of course.

I'm for it. The idea that only men are drafted doesn't make any sense.

I guess my question is, why shouldn't women be drafted?

I'm a women, btw.

We don’t have a draft, and probably never will again.

They should absolutely be drafted. If more Americans have skin in the game, it means more pressure on our leaders as they make the decision to go to war.

Wanna get white wealthy Republicans opposed to overseas military adventures? Send their precious sorority daughters to Iraq to dig a ditch or clean the latrine as part of the draft.

I actually think our all-volunteer military allows politicians to be much more reckless with soldiers' lives. Too many Americans are apathetic and not paying attention because it doesn't really affect them.

I honestly would make a mandatory military draft for every American for two years after high school. Allow combat force to be all-volunteer, but force everyone to serve. You see a radical change in how Americans view foreign policy, the MIC, budgets for military, care for vets, etc.

All in for it. Equality everywhere.

I don’t think anyone should be drafted and so I therefore don’t think we should be expanding the pool of people to be drafted. Also, if we are going to do this we need to fix the terrible military sexual assault problem we have first. The statistics are grim.

Ok. Sure. But let’s start with equal pay, equal reproductive rights etc. why start with the thing that can kill you? Seems a little perverse.

+1. And if we did, I would college/grad school/PHD my kid out until they aged out. Or have them sign up for JAG or something.

Women shouldn’t be drafted because it already sucks to be a woman. This is like the only benefit. Obviously women CAN enlist. But not forcing women to enlist is one of the FEW benefits of being a woman. Insisting on it implies that men and women are totally equal otherwise in our society and that is not the case.

I’m a woman (also a veteran). I think young women should sign up for selective service, just as young men do. We can’t complain about wanting equality only when it suits our needs.

Huh?

It already sucks to be a poor white guy with an abusive father. It already sucks to be an inner city black kid. There are lot of avenues you could do down with that logic. Let's not play the "Sucks Olympics." The draft has nothing to do with that.

Woman here. If you want full citizenship privileges, you should have full citizenship responsibilities.
