| Omg 2.4 mom you give this 2.7 mom of a full pay blue chip athletic recruit hope. I literally cannot sleep thinking about my kids utter failure of grades and the implications this will have. I’d be thrilled with those schools. |
English please. |
Yes on most of these. Tulane has gotten ridiculously competitive in the past half decade or so. U Miami slightly less so but still not an easy admit. Others: Rollins Elon College of Charleston University of Denver Furman TCU Miami of OH Indiana CU Boulder |
I was rushing and I didn't add a note to that one. DH went to Pitt as well as other relatives on his side. DS had zero interest in Pitt but DH was adamant he apply. DH and my FIL are donors but not BIG donors, however they are still pretty active alums. They got up to various alum events from time to time, etc. |
Oh, c’mon, Bucknell does not belong in the same sentence with College of Charleston. American is actually a decent university. |
I think SMU, Baylor and Pepperdine might fit too? |
NP. All three are decent or better but give off “rich boarding school kid” vibes. The academic quality standard of “decent” school is a much higher bar to clear in my eyes for private universities like American and Bucknell, considering how much they charge. I have an estranged but wealthy close relative who used the fact their FIL purchased a named building for the school to guarantee their middling kid an admissions offer. This was for a school listed in this thread. |
UMiami, Tulane and GW with a C average? C’mon PP, even with the “this might be outdated” disclaimer, you can do better than that. Tulane had like a 9 percent acceptance rate this year. Highly doubt many of those had C’s. Maybe a few outliers with very large donations. Your list could be appropriate for wealthy kids with C‘a and made huge donations. |
Curious, what are some examples of the “classy but broke” schools? |
I totally think UMiami and GW are still average rich kid schools. Remember these schools have programs where you agree to delay attending for fall semester of freshman year so you are not counted in the entering stats and only rich kids can afford to do these programs, usually they are study abroad. |
DP But if a school is known enough to be mentioned on here in *any* light its not really broke. Schools are never going to close in droves like DCUM thinks they are. I could name many private colleges with seven digit endowments and they are still open, and I have not once seen these schools mentioned on DCUM. THOSE are the ''broke'' ones. Schools that are known enough to be mentioned here like Juniata or Rollins aren't going anywhere. |
| Example of a classy but broke school: Sarah Lawrence |
I see what you mean but is Sarah Lawrence ''classy''? From what I can see among my kids' friends urban schools are hip now and ''preppy'' is out. ''Hipster'' is in. I'd say the following are rich average kid schools (by average I mean average among rich kids): Pace Hofstra Any art school Emerson |
|
I once would have said NYU, Boston U, CU Boulder or USC but no more.
Chapman Santa Clara? Gettysburg College |
| In my eyes most of the NESCAC and Patriot League schools fit this definition but DCUM wants to think everything's a meritocracy so i'll get flamed for that. |
