Post-Varsity Blues, where do the UC send their kids if they end up being average academically?

The rich generally don't care about rankings. It's MC status-obsessed wannabes who obsess over their kid getting into an "elite" college. And of course the true core of the fantasy is their unwashed kid dating and marrying a wealthy peer. It's no wonder why the rich are so skittish around MC interlopers.

Those are all at least state flagships. Wake me up when a Walton goes to Arkansas Tech

My nephew who has an eye on Notre Dame has his eyes on the University of Arkansas. Why? A smaller state school with some interesting alumni.

Yes but UArk is a state flagship.

What's with all the Arkansas fluffing lately?

Lately, as in just in this thread only.

They just give big dollar donations directly to the school in exchange for admission, aka "the front door."

What made Varsity Blues so bad was that the schools were victims of the fraud. People were getting in for a lot cheaper than the "front door" method.

Personally, I think federal funding should be suspended for any university that considers legacy or donations in its admissions process.

I don't think that is how the liberal elite who are in bed with the top liberal universities will allow things to change.

If you believe differently, I have a bridge to sell you.

Butler University.
Marian University.
Purdue University - Fort Wayne
Ohio State

This is a horrible list. No to all.

For UC midwesterners, yes to Butler. Yes to OSU- rush certain frats/sororities.

Sewanee for kids that get Bs and Cs

Flagship public universities (in Greek Life, socially isolated away from their unwashed poor and middle class college classmates) and private colleges are full of rich kids. Just google search colleges by pell grant percentage and sort in ascending order. The usual suspects include NYU, SMU, Wake Forest, Michigan, Trinity, Pepperdine, Tulane. Rich generally aren't sending their kid to some commuter school or a backwater regional university full of local mouth breathers.

Dennison and Sewannee aren't exactly "elite" schools that UMC parents brag about sending their kids to, but they aren't for "non students" either. Every graduate I've met from either school I've been impressed with. And Dennison has actually become highly selective as its number of applicants has surged. Sewannee's applicant pool is limited by the school's location - you either love it or hate it - so is more self selective. The point is, these are not schools for rich dumb slackers. Think High Point, U of Tampa, etc.

This just makes me chuckle. I lived in Cincinnati in the 80s. Denison was for preppy rich kids who couldn't get into Dartmouth. I knew several who all ended up wearing Brooks Brothers suits working at horrible jobs at insurance companies. I read on these boards everyone asking about Denison, Kenyon, Oberlin, Wooster and Miami of Ohio, and just can't believe these are now highly selective, desirable schools. That just goes to show how highly competitive the top schools are. Trickle down college selectivity.....
