Masks at drop off... why?

Anonymous
It makes some people feel more comfortable, including teachers and other parents. If that's what it takes to have the kids back in school, I'm all for it! Plus hopefully fewer colds and flu.

You will not have fewer colds or flu because people wear masks outside. Pure theater. But you’re right, if that is what it takes to get kids back in school, let people keep doing it.

I am a teacher and most that I know hate wearing masks and can’t wait to get rid of them.

Just @#$% put the mask on, if for no other reason than it is polite and makes some people feel more comfortable right now. Isn't that enough? Or do you enjoy being a jerk?

Why does it piss you off so much to learn that it’s totally unnecessary to wear a mask outside? That is also deranged.

You are wrong. Parents are allowed on the outdoor school grounds at our elementary school.

They are not at ours. Not until dismissal is totally complete at the end of the day. In the morning, we must stay outside the gate.

My uncle died of alcoholism. My friends still drink around me when we go out to dinner. The restaurant doesn’t hide all of the bottles of wine to make me comfortable. I doubt these people care about mask theatre.

+1 People are still dying of COVID. Under 12s aren't eligible for vaccination. Just wear the damn mask and stop whining OP. It's the least you can do as a functional member of society.

But it’s not saving lives. I think even you know that. In the entire world of masked outdoor school pickups has a single covid case been prevented do you think? I’m fine with doing stuff that helps like you know getting vaccinated or getting my kid vaccinated but why should we do stuff that’s pointless?

Why not? I've been chatting with parents at pickup and someone sneezes or coughs. We're not distanced. When it gets noisy, we stand about a foot apart to hear each other. They're probably not sick, but if they were, why are the masks not reducing the spread of viruses or cough/sneeze molecules?

At my kids upper NW school I am one of the few parents wearing a mask at pick up. Do I think I need to wear one outdoors fully vaccinated? Of course not. Do I do it out of respect for the schools rules, regardless of what I think of them? Yes.

I tell my kids, when you go to someone’s house and they ask you to take off your shoes, you do it. Your rules do NOT apply on someone else’s property, and if you think they do, that’s called entitlement.

Actually, you are completely missing the point. There is a rule. You disagree with that rule. Maybe you are even right that the rule is unnecessary. That is not what I am debating. The pandemic has caused around 600,000 deaths in the United States, and people have been through a lot. It will take time for people to adjust. Wearing a mask is a completely and utterly trivial ask, and if that act of doing so makes others feel a little more comfortable, then one should be completely fine doing so. Quite frankly given the politicization of mask wearing by the right and that correlation with nutjobs, including those who could be vaccinated but are not for political, crazy reasons, one should be thrilled to do so for a little while longer. Not doing so, and making a big stink about wearing a mask, is being a jerk. Pure and simple. So just mask up. You say it is totally unnecessary? Fine. It is also totally harmless. Getting upset about that is just weird.

I’ve never talked to anyone at pickup from a one foot distance, nor has anyone ever coughed or sneezed on me. So no, I don’t believe that outdoor masking is going to have a meaningful impact on viral transmission between parents.

DP. Who is making a big stink about it? You are imagining a level of rage that I don’t see on this thread. It seems like you are projecting, because you certainly sound very angry.

And thanks for confirming that outdoor mask wearing is to a large extent a political gesture to show you’re not a Trumper.
