Daycare now requiring masks for 2 year olds- ok to ask for deposit back?

Anonymous
My MIL teaches Kindergarten and she says the kids that age chew in the masks and won't keep them on. One kid ate like half of a paper mask. And these kids are older.

It's totally a false sense of security, kids that close to each other all day, the masks really won't do anything, especially with typical kid compliance. They're napping and eating together.

I think you are underestimating the influence of peer pressure. I thought there was no way in hell my 3 year old would wear a mask all day. Lo and behold, she puts her mask on in the car and leaves it on whenever it's required. Sometimes she forgets to take it off when we get in the car at pick up, she's so used to it.

I bet OP's daycare does none of these things and she is just making stuff up.

Her kid doesn't even go there yet.

No, you won't get your deposit back.

I agree with others that suggest you just try it and see how draconian they really are at masks (spoiler: they won't be). Unless you seriously think they will do time outs and yelling as "discipline" for a 2 year old, because that is not developmentally appropriate. In that case, you should start over on your daycare search, and re-evaluate your criteria in order to exclude places that would do that.

I'm not in your county, so we don't have a mask mandate. I think my county is mandated > 12, recommended > 5 or maybe it is > 2. My 2 year old is great at wearing one for brief periods, so he could wear it if we took him to a store. They are "recommended" at school, but in practice, the little ones wear them at pickup and drop off (they only time the classes are exposed to each other), then maybe for the first 15 minutes of the day. Then they have breakfast, and no one puts a mask back on until pick up. The teachers are masked (and vaccinated). I think this is probably pretty common, even with a mandate, except they may make more effort to put them back on inside, when not eating or napping. That really ends up not to be very long at all.

My two year old wears a mask. My kindergartner definitely wears a mask

Why are there so many bad parents out there unable to teach their kids to wear masks?
Or is it just that the parents aren’t trying?
This isn’t hard, people.

You’re right, it’s not hard to get kids to wear a mask. What is hard is to have kids wear masks for eight hours a day and keep them clean and sanitary.

From your post, and the fact that someone "complained to the county" it sounds like this a county mandate, then you are SOL. Those are the rules of participating in a society with others. If you don't like it, shell out for a nanny.

Otherwise, you have given no indication that this daycare won't operate all others have illustrated - they will try their best to keep the 2 years old masks, but understand the challenge. And ultimately that will be the teacher's issue to enforce. You seem to be worried of potential discipline for your child that hasn't even happened.

I know you are mad. I would be furious. But if you are in DC or anyplace like DC, it may take at least 30 days to move to a new daycare. I'd give your notice as soon as you have a new option.

Also, I'm shocked they'd consider masks to be a discipline issue for the child. Like you, I screened a ton of daycares on the masks issue and even the ones who were more stringent saw it as the teacher's job to help children "do the best they can" with them.

I think OP is more worried about DC getting in trouble for tugging on other children's masks, not for resisting wearing one. It's going to be a learning curve for everyone, since the policy is only starting now for the classroom.

well then this will be a GREAT learning experience for DC they need to learn at some point they are to keep their hands to themselves.

So I’m curious where this daycare is- DC or which county? Im guessing it must be DC or Montgomery county, but I’m not sure how much teeth MoCo’s requirement has since daycares are licensed by the state.

My daycare center in Montgomery county requires 2 year old & above to wear mask since last year March/April. I thought it is cdc mandate something like that. My 2 year old is going to start at daycare next month, and I have already prepared many little masks for her to wear. She has been wearing masks at public playground.

The cdc and Maryland’s mandate is 5 and up.

CDC is 2 and up. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/guidance-for-childcare.html

This is why you send multiple clean masks, and try different styles until there’s one that works. Happy masks or any beaked mask help prevent chewing.

This gives child care providers the ability to make an exception and not require a kid to wear a mask if they can't wear it properly. If the two year old wears it fine, then great. but if the child chews on it, pulls it down, fusses with it etc, then they are not ready to wear it properly and don't have to wear it. I work in a preschool in DC, and this is our protocol.

You’re lucky you haven’t been reported, the kids should be wearing masks.

Just send extra masks! Again, not hard. Y’all so helpless.

Why? Teachers have been vaccinated and 2 year olds aren’t properly wearing masks for 8 hours a day at daycare anyway. It is theater not grounded in science. It is just ridiculous at this point.

This person seems like a Karen- ready to report, for something that doesn't impact them at all. *shakes head*
