Daycare now requiring masks for 2 year olds- ok to ask for deposit back?

Anonymous
Look, I have a 2 y/o in daycare. Do I love that she has to wear one? No, but because we're in DC, it's not up for discussion. It's the rule across the board. She wasn't great about the mask (for us at home) when she started back but she's actually done shockingly well in the daycare setting, and it has even extended to outside daycare. Toddler peer pressure is real, and it's effective. You can try asking for your deposit back, but if the answer is no, you might as well try sending him and dealing with the masks. It might be totally fine.

Now that our county is more than 44% fully vaccinated-- NOW we need masks for the toddlers?!?!
The daycare had another person complain to the County, they were inspected, and are now required to have all 2 year olds masked.

I'm so mad. We have almost $4k in deposits for this daycare that require 30 days notice for our leaving to get back, but they can just spring the 2 year old mask mandate for next day application. I get that it's not their fault, but it's also not mine. I spent MONTHS interviewing and researching daycares before selecting this one.

Our 2 year old is going to flip out about it. We have trouble getting him to wear a mask for 20 mins on an errand, let alone for 9 hours. And he has a bad habit of pulling on other people's masks (mom and dad's) and I know he will be getting in trouble for it at school (which I don't want him to hurt other kids, but the mask thing he doesn't think of as hurting anybody). This means he's going to spend a lot more time in time outs and discipline and getting yelled at for things that a normal 2 year old does. :/

What is the best or most reasonable way to ask for the deposit back without having to stay the next month?

Huh? The teachers at the daycare you chose after months of research yell at students? That's very odd. If you're just assuming this will happen then you're most likely very mistaken. I'm sure the teachers and admin will be working very gently with kids to get them accustomed to mask wearing. Have you even had a conversation with your child's teacher about this? If your plan is to change daycares/schools every time there's a policy that might make your kid "flip out" then you're going to be miserable. Chill out.

I’ll put it to you this way. Your daycare knows that masks on two-year-olds is safety theater. They can’t wear it in a sanitary fashion, none of them can. How do I know this? I work in a daycare. I have commented on these forms before that not a single kid has a clean and dry mask. They are always wet, snotty and the kids touch them all the time. The issue is that some one made a complaint and now they have to mask them.

Chances are they’re not going to be rigid and enforce it or make a big deal if somebody isn’t wearing a Mask.

Don’t be mad at the daycare, be mad at that governing county, licensing office, etc.

If you know they yell and do time out, then run. Leave the deposit and run.

My daughter moved to the 2s class in her daycare and had to start wearing a mask inside. They spend at least three hours outside (with no masks) and have three meals (breakfast snack, lunch and snack) inside without mask so it’s not that constant. Plus they are two. My daughter is horrible at wearing it, they remind her and try but it’s a non-issue. The other kids in her class appear to comply more but they aren’t kicking her out for not wearing it.

OP, if this daycare is using time outs for 2 year olds you should pull your kid out regardless of the mask issue. Teachers should not be yelling at 2 year olds or putting them in time out.

Your son will get used to the mask as much as the other kids do. Kids that young don’t keep them on but the teachers try. You, however, must insist he not pull off your mask or anyone’s mask! It’s not a game, OP, and you made a mistake acting as if it were.

LITTLE KIDS SHOULD NOT BE WEARING MASKS. This is ridiculous. Show me the data that points to young children being impacted in any way by covid-19, especially now.

Its a county requirement and your kid nor the other kids are vaccinated. Grow up.

OP intentionally chose a daycare that is violating health regulations. She should be more worried about whether they are following rules put in place to protect her kid from physical abuse and child molestation. They are probably cutting corners there too.

40,000 American kids, including little kids, have lost a parent. I think that qualifies as "impacted".

+1.

I get it OP, masks for 2yos is stupid. We actually recently changed our 2yo from a family daycare that didn’t require masks to a center that does and we almost didn’t because of the mask requirement. It was best for the long term to make the switch but if we could have been guaranteed a spot later on I would have waited till this masking toddlers nonsense is over with.

But while I think it’s dumb, my 2yo doesn’t care, and now it’s no longer a struggle to get them to wear it other places either. But the teachers are pretty patient and understanding about it, while it sounds like the ones at your aren’t- it might just be because it’s new for them, they’re probably scared about getting cited. But that kind of reaction would have me worried about whether they are employing proper disciplinary tactics in general.

So I’m curious where this daycare is- DC or which county? Im guessing it must be DC or Montgomery county, but I’m not sure how much teeth MoCo’s requirement has since daycares are licensed by the state.

The whining here is unreal. You are overreacting big time.

Agree with PPs that 2yos will wear masks once all their peers are doing so. This is NBD and also the county req right now.

Very strange that OP is horrified by masks but totally okay with what sounds like an absurdly draconian "discipline" policy for that age and this area?!

Your 2yr old is not going to flip out. You are flipping out. 2yr olds are great at following peers and adults around them. Also a mask will not hurt your kid.

I get it that you are disappointed by this change, but this is just the beginning of things school is going to spring on you over which you have no control.
