| Summer swim meets are packed with young, unvaccinated children. Why would you want to crowd more people into the pool? |
Do you really not understand the science behind vaccination, the science regarding outdoor spread, or the data regarding Covid’s impact on kids? Adding vaccinated adults to an outdoor swim meet does nothing to increase the risk. Being outside makes it a lot less likely that even if someone at the meet had Covid that it would become some type of superspreader event and lead to a surge of Covid in a county where at least 50% of the population will be fully vaxxed and the transmission rate will probably be under 1%. The likelihood that your child will get seriously ill even if they got Covid is lower than had they contracted the flu, and yes that is an appropriate comparison here because we are taking only about kids and all vulnerable adults have been protected. I know it’s going to be hard for some people to let go of the fear we have been living with for a year, but we have reached the point where people can return to their lives, and the fear harbored by some can’t be allowed to dictate how the rest of us live. |
At last night’s team rep meeting, the MCSL board reiterated their intention to make NO changes to the meet guidelines. This on the same day that (1) vaccinations started for 12-15 year olds, (2) MoCo announced that they will achieve their 50% fully vaccinated threshold on 5/28 and lift all county-specific restrictions, and (3) the CDC announced that fully vaccinated individuals no longer need to wear masks in almost any situation. I have no idea WTF is going on. Apparently the board spent time berating team reps for complaining about these ridiculous rules, which as a reminder will limit swimmers, require masks for everyone, prohibit spectators and food sales, among other things. Apparently they know more about COVID than their fellow MoCo resident Dr. Fauci?? |

Can someone confirm that this would only apply to A meets?
Can I lobby our swim reps and pool board to relax the rules and limits for B meets or are their hands tied? Thanks |

49.8% fully vaccinated today so will be > 50% tmrw and, as above, two weeks on from then all restrictions will be lifted.
I guess some people just love to make rules. The MSCL board should run for Montgomery County Council. |
I would argue that the rules do not apply to B meets because those are not official MCSL meets. However, since the board apparently thinks they can make rules for PRACTICE, I suspect they would argue that the meet rules apply for B meets as well. They have said as much in the past, but that was when the meet rules were approved relaxations to county rules. I would still lobby your team’s leadership to run the B meets however you want and are comfortable with, consistent with MoCo rules, provided the other team agrees to do so. I really hope the MCSL board has better things to do on a Wednesday evening than traveling around the county policing swim meets. |
Do you think the board is going to police swim meets? Feels hard to enforce a mask requirement for vaccinated individuals if there is no policy in place by a government. |
This. Wouldn’t more adults help kids stay apart and meets run smoothly??? |
| It’s ridiculous that meets don’t start for over a month and they are unwilling to change rules. |
They have said that there will be “surprise inspections”, but I don’t know if that’s an empty threat. They certainly can’t force people to wear masks but I guess they could threaten to disqualify teams that don’t comply with their rules. |
| Isn’t the MCSL board elected? Could someone post the members who are making these policies. Happy to vote against them next time, assuming cooler heads don’t prevail down the road. |
There must be some way to vote against the board- every pool is a paying member and they are not a legally binding body. Elect another board or create another governing body- we can all do it if we put our minds to it! |
| Someone should get a petition going or some actionable item. It feels like there is plenty of time to fix this situation. Time trials aren’t for a month. |
| I feel bad for the team reps that have to relay this to their teams/families. I don’t understand what MCSLs rationale for this is. Its like Marc Elrich is on the board and we just don’t know it. |
Or we could simply have no emeritus members. Why the decision makers no longer have kids in mcsl is absurd. They have no dog in this fight except saying how smart they are. If this was a board of current mcsl parents I would expect a different outcome. It’s also notable teams were given a say on the 15-19 issue, but they were not given a say in this. That is because the board wouldn’t have received the desired results. Initially we were told the plan was preliminary and they would re-evaluate and update as the county health department allowed. That clearly was a lie. Unfortunately these are not the type of people to see the backlash and reconsider, we have seen this with their officiating in the past. They can’t take a step back and absorb the situation they double down because they are so smart and they couldn’t possibly be wrong. Wish they would open their eyes and ears but it’s simply not happening. Incompetence starts at the top and that’s how the league will operate this year. |
