Summer pool rules

If someone called a county health department to complain that members weren't adhering to the 10 ft rule, there is no way the health department is coming to investigate. If you are talking about Arlington County, the county officials there said early on in the pandemic that the county was not going to expend resources to enforce social distancing. Remember that fuss about The Lot last summer? The County Board said that it was up to patrons to self-police, which is what enflamed the Open Schools crowd-- because, wherever you fall on school reopening, it is a true statement to say that the County has turned a blind eye toward social distancing EXCEPT in the case of schools. No way will the health department show up to investigate a private swim club simply because someone calls to say that people aren't standing 10 ft apart in the pool.

But if you're the board or the manager, do you want to deal with the nonsense if you know you have members who are likely to cause trouble? Again, with regard to the pool we're discussing, the board knows this is a ridiculous regulation but also has to balance risk and their membership.

Pool managers are paid to monitor the pool and manage enforcement of the pool policies during the season. What does your pool's manager do all day?

Well that’s a whole different issue 🙄

Max capacity of 75 people, online reservations, masks unless swimming, snack bar closed.

So dumb,

Ours isn't open yet but says the rules will be the same as well and similar to yours. I think they are pandering to the most extreme cautious families, last year they let these families defer membership for a minimal fee but not this year so they're trying to get them to stay I guess. Plus I don't think all the board members really trust that MoCo will actually defer to the state, the county just can't help themselves sometimes.

I am the person you replied to.

I agree they are pandering to the most cautious, but our pool has a huge waiting list, so I am not totally sure why. Perhaps some of those cautious families are on the board or are friends of board members.

Our pool also a seniors only hour every weekday again this year even though all seniors are most likely vaccinated, and we have all the capacity, masks, and distance restrictions for open swim anyway. Again, I assume there are some influential seniors.

PP here and yes I suspect you are right. Ours also has an extensive waitlist so its bizarre.

With a huge waiting list, there's no need to pander to the most forward-leaning. Feel free to leave, they will fill those vacancies. Your argument about pandering runs both ways.

Rather than berating the board members, remember they volunteered to serve even knowing how much work it is. Remember this, and step up to run for an open position next year if you are unhappy. You voted for these fellow members to serve and they are all making the decisions they believe are best for their particular pool. It's easy to throw spitballs from the sidelines. Constructive feedback, sure, share your opinion. Don't be a jerk about it.

Forward leaning? Come on. We are a year and a half into this pandemic. We know a lot more about it now. Infection rates are plummeting and more than half the people in our zip code are fully vaccinated.

I am not some crazy anti-mask Trumper and I am not being a jerk. I just want our board to use a little bit of common sense.

Our neighborhood pool is still questionable on opening. The HOA is currently fighting about it. They also fight about requiring masks on walks while in the neighborhood and on HOA maintained property. This is a large south Arlington neighborhood. I’m so tired of the race to be the most cautious.

Your HOA is mandating outdoor masks?!!

The governor is planning to lift all restrictions in June and he has alluded the mask mandate (for indoors) will probably not be renewed at the end of June. What do individuals with no epidemiology background take it upon themselves to go above and beyond. Ridiculous.

DP
I’m cynical I guess because I still wonder if this will apply to the pools.

They haven’t mandated it, but it’s highly encouraged while on HOA maintained property... so pretty much all outdoor space. We have some very vocal and overly cautious People in the neighborhood who view their restrictions (even those self imposed) as a point of pride. Unfortunately these people are either retired or stay at home and don’t work so they have a lot of free time to stir up drama. They even complain about children on the grass because it may impact its “green-ness”.

Well, they might not have a choice but to lift the mask requirement. Before covid it was actually illegal to wear a mask in public except in specific situations. In order to make general mask wearing legal there will have to be a provision in place.

umm where was it illegal to wear a mask in public before Covid? Only place it’s illegal that I’m aware of is a bank... and that’s a private institution not a public place.

Immediate PP here. How am I being a jerk? I’m venting on an anonymous forum and not naming names. We only became members the year before the pandemic. Partly I’m just worried how the pool can remain solvent. Something doesn’t add up.
