Where is John V when we need him?

He decided he was done with Arlington politics when it became clear that Arlington voters as a whole have no real interest in a balance to the otherwise unchecked power of the Arlington Democrats. He got into office on a particular wedge issue and then worked really hard to address issues Arlington voters said they cared about. Nevertheless, he was voted out on a straight party-line vote in favor of someone with virtually no credentials.

Kadera has the support of the Arlington Democrats machine, so she will win the caucus and then the general election. And Arlington voters will get the same as they’ve always gotten.

But probably not. I’m not saying Turner is a better candidate, I’m undecided at the moment. But nothing about Kadera makes me think her election will change anything about the way APS operates.

2. It is a non issue for whomever takes office in January. It may feel like THE issue this month, but I’m interested in not just the next six weeks but the next six years.

Haven’t watched the debate but am now intrigued and will catch the recording whenever it comes out. I agree with a post on another thread that this election is absolutely a referendum on the current SB and APS performance during RTS. Elementary kids will not be vaccinated for some time. We will be dealing with COVID issues for years. Also I think your views on RTS during this past year show your judgement and values. Mary doesn’t even support mores days now for kids. She is perfectly fine with us being dead last in region to return kids to school. Also she talks in buzz words so I don’t feel like I really know what she means on anything.

Viewing it as a referendum on the current SB and APS performance is just...dumb. Sorry, but the one person we are electing is not going to change what they've done or not done or really have them quaking in their boots.

I think it's bizarre that she keeps bringing everything back to this one issue. All I can suspect is she doesn't have a whole lot of knowledge on anything else.

Or she’s trying to appeal to the irrational folks who can only think of RTS and nothing else - even when RTS isn’t relevant anymore.

I think anyone who doesn't think we will be dealing with COVID next year is out of their mind or incredibly naieve. There will need to be policies on masking, quarantines, sports, lunch, etc. These will very much be issues next year, even in January. People tried to avoid RTS last year too because obviously it wouldnt be an issue for this school year. That lack of forsight is how we ended up with no new instruction last spring. Why should we waste resources on planning DL when we will be able to make it all up this school year - look how that turned out! Also, APS has a very warped view of what equity means. I like Miranda's answers about equity. Mary sounds like she was on board with APS decisions for no new instruction last year and weak answers on math changes being proposed. I worry that members of the school board will be afraid to denounce bad policy if the proponents attach the word equity to it.

But if the SB doesn't take any votes on any of these issues, it really doesn't matter what the candidate or ultimate elected think.

It’s be so refreshing to have a board member call for a vote and watch the other 4 democratically elected members refuse. That would be worth it!

Do you really think that Miranda is such a change agent? Sure, she’ll ask tough questions. I think Mary will, too, and actually has the educational and APS background to be able to pose thoughtful and relevant ones across a broad range of subjects. Maybe Miranda will push for a vote. Why is everyone hung up on that so much? I think it’s clear that even if a vote had been held once or even multiple times in this last year, the SB would have supported Duran’s plan for APS. So why do you think it’s so necessary to have had the vote(s)? If it’s because you can then hold them accountable based on their votes, you can make that same assessment based on their comments and questions throughout this period. I seriously see nothing that Miranda brings to the table that is better or more well-developed than Mary.

I don't like what Miranda brings to the table. Uninformed screaming. If that's a change agent, that's like Trump being a change agent, and I don't want it.

Mary isn't my dream candidate but I like her well enough and I like that she actually knows the right questions to ask. Miranda doesn't have much of a clue.

I agree. I think Miranda’s platform is better laid out. RTS is top issue and then a few others. I think the RTS debate will actually go on another year or more with the speed and paranoia of APS. Also wondering if Duran is going to bail for more sane pastures. But Miranda is still a democrat as is Mary so at the core it’s one in the same and I might not even bother to vote.

On using initials - one set of initials used in this thread doesn’t even reflect that actual person’s name but rather the initials of her nickname that was branded here on the forum 😀
