Marylanders - Are you fearful that police will not be able to recruit quality candidates?

gunning down car thieves. Not saying it's justified, but wanetd to correct that for you ^

Yes, because the punishment for trying to break into a car should be death, and an off duty police officer is the judge and jury.

What's wrong with teaching people to not break into cars and steal them, to not carjack, and to not hurt others? Very different from taking a loaf old bread because you're hungry. Car thieves are HURTING and killing people.

There will always be misfits who steal things like cars. They should be shot at?

If they're hurting someone else in the process, yes.

There's a slight pay difference...

Starting salaries for public defenders and police officers are basically identical, at least where I am in Maryland.

Doctors pay huge fees in malpractice insurance. They also get to plan out their surgeries, and ask for a second opinion. It's not a split-second decision.

What other jobs are like that?

Certainly not ED docs. there are a few of them around the country, and I suspect many do more split second decision making than most cops.

You know most cops never fire a gun, right? About 1/4 have during their entire career.

Not in most places.

I would be thrilled to pay more in taxes and have better trained cops that make more money. I'd be even more thrilled to roll back some of the tax breaks over the last 40 years for the ultra-wealthy, and we could pay them even more. And hold them more accountable.

Fine, but I'm picturing someone breaking into parked cars based on the bolded. I'm unaware of what happened in Takoma.

Anonymous wrote:Nope. If you don't want to be a police officer now that it's slightly less difficult to investigate police misconduct, that's fine, you shouldn't be a police officer anyway.

I hope you get exactly what you want.

Yup. And many other civil servant lawyers and private practice lawyers make similar comp to cops. There’s a lot more to the field than biglaw and bigfed.

This this this.

Take just $5B from Bezos and we could have a huge improvement in policing nationwide.

It wouldn't even be unpopular.

So why aren't DCURBAN posters promoting a career as a cop for their kids?

Yep. My small DC firm hires starting at $65k, which is what MPD officers make after their, admittedly lengthy, probationary period. The big firm types bring the average up, but plenty of lawyers are out there making similar salaries to police officers. (It may be the same for doctors, I don't know their job market at all)

I like how in the news this week is the story of two MCPD cops who abused, screamed at and threatened a 5 year old boy and who faced no major consequences (police chiefs says that they are still in a position to respond to similar calls with minors) and people are worried about the effect of this change on the quality of police in MD. Laughable!

You don't sound like someone who's been a victim of a violent crime.

Thank you.

Some allies you turned out to be.

I seem to recall that the cops who were defending the capitol building were not the ones I have read about who are abusing power.

I think people are supportive of the good guy cops, and we'd really like them to be able to do the work they committed to without as$h0le bad apples at their sides.

Is that so hard to understand? Exactly how black and white is your world?

Tell that to the poster of the meme on page 1.

I’m not the one justifying my dislike of cops. That’s you.

I'm not the poster of the meme on page 1. I also have not expressed dislike of cops in general -- in fact, I am arguing to pay them more and give them more training. It's a vital role to play, and it's hard, and there shouldn't be people who can stare a camera in the eye with a feral grin while they suffocate someone to death in custody, fully restrained, doing it.

I can see this is hard for you. I hope you are not a cop; or if you are, that this is just you having a bad night online, and that this lack of clarity and understanding is not reflected in your work.
