Marylanders - Are you fearful that police will not be able to recruit quality candidates?

Nope. Not even a little.

If a cop does nothing wrong, they should not be concerned with this new bill, right? Why would they be concerned? They have union reps who will defend them vigorously if they are accused of wrong doing.

I know a few cops. I trust them. But I also know there are many cops who are dirty.

Hopefully it will make them think twice about shooting and killing an unarmed, innocent person as they slept in their own bed at night or kneeling on a person's neck for almost 8 minutes. Or otherwise murdering people in broad daylight, on camera, in front of witnesses without due process and walking away without a single consequence. More states need to do this.

Also glad that Hogan is reminding democratic voters that loved him as a reasonable republican of who republicans really are - even the "nice" ones. Remember his vetoes of this legislation when he runs for national office.

I hope it is harder to recruit police. And I’d love to see them be a lot more expensive because they had to attend a multi-year police academy with far far far more training.

They’re obviously not doing so great a job at recruiting “quality” right now, so maybe this is a chance to change strategies.

Increase pay and then select the non-morons.

Vs scraping the bottom of the barrel, like we’re doing now in both policing and education.

We have police officers yelling racist slurs at marines, so the quality of their recruits are pretty bad. Maybe they need something like this to send a message that the police force is not an extension of the KKK or proud boys.

No!

They probably need to be paid more, and their relationship with the public needs to be reframed. So many officers seem to not understand that they are SERVANTS there to protect the people they are charged with policing. They are not occupiers, and we are not the enemy. We need to start recruiting people who want to serve, not people who are attracted to the power.

Whatever we've been doing so far is not giving us "quality candidates." I am far more fearful about the cops than I am about what happens in the absence of cops.

I would hazard a guess that there are good people who didn't go into law enforcement precisely because the standards were not where they should be. And I don't mean schooling -- I mean character and ability to control oneself.

You don't sound like someone who's been a victim of a violent crime.

Yes, because the punishment for trying to break into a car should be death, and an off duty police officer is the judge and jury.
