Vast majority of this is missing K and some elemntary kids.

Middle school is down just 140 kids; high school down like 50 kids. Most kids in APS are staying in APS.

Fact check on aisle 9, please. In Arlington right now, if you can afford private, you're going private next year. I don't know many who are staying at APS willingly.

We must not know the same people. I'm in a Yorktown neighborhood and only knowing one kid going to O'Connell.

I think the bigger point of interest will not be who left THIS school year, but who chooses to leave for the upcoming school year even with in person likely. That will be telling about what the communities think of the schools.
There are limited slots outside of public in Virginia, and obviously those opportunities are very limited by income level. I suspect more would leave if they could.

Yep. It's a completely different ballgame at the elem and middle school level. HS kids can make DL work. It sucks but they're making it work and are less likely to leave. My senior is sticking it out although this year has been a total waste. Moved our elem kid to private in the fall. His 5th grade class lost 10 kids this year.

Moreover, in high school you have honors, AP, and other differentiated classes. While in elementary and middle school they lump all skill levels in same class, so your bright kid is stuck re-doing all the material that fell fallow because of virtual school etc. basically, a 7th grader can expect to be learning 6th grade material in APS for the next couple of years.

Agree. My DD is a HS junior this year and I wish I'd moved her to private for this year but at this point, not going to move her for her last year of HS.

No way, a ton of Lyon Village parents are all going to ASFS (we have our first virtual meeting this month), and they could all easily afford private.

What are you talking about? I’m at asfs and know maybe 30 families that went private this year, none have any intention of coming back before middle school. All Lyon village. Must be east Lyon village versus west Lyon village

We could easily afford private and are staying with APS. I do know a few parents moving to private next year for 9th but this year didn’t have anything to do with it- it was always their plan for high school (and I knew this plan before the pandemic as well).

The small independent privates are 15-20K. A Catholic school is about 5-6K a kid. Most parents can afford Catholic in this area even if it is some lifestyle changes (i.e. not eating out or picking up coffees, etc)

I'm in Alexandria and it's more like $8k at our local parish school and that's if you're Catholic and a member of the parish. We'd have to pay closer to $12k if we wanted to switch to a Catholic school. We're already on a tight budget and don't eat out, vacation, etc.

Plus the parents and staff treated my friend horribly for only having one child, so I'm extremely wary of Catholic schools.

It's crazy to think 8000 private slots were available throughout the area. Some must have homeschooled or redshirted.

I know a lot of SAHMs who chose to homeschool for K or 1st this year.

You jest, but yes we are all east of highland st (the poorer side of LV). Kids are older elem, not sure if many will split off for MS or HS.

Are there even 30 families in LV zoned for ASFS? There are only 800 homes in LV. https://www.mansionglobal.com/articles/arlington-virginias-lyon-village-feels-like-norman-rockwell-on-a-generous-budget-212234
