No I’d have the 10-15 kids per court play on the empty soccer field right next to the court and allow the tennis players to play on the tennis court. Seems like that would maximize facility use for the benefit of everyone. I don’t understand this futsal thing, but it seems like they could double the number of kids playing by doing soccer right next door. So this is clearly not about getting kids exercise (if so they are doing it seriously wrong) Do people actually pay extra to have their kids play soccer on a tennis court when a vacant soccer field is right next door. I’ve heard of some scams, but this seems like a new one. |
You’re right, you don’t understand, and you don’t want to. Being crotchety seems to be working well for you. |
Good plan. We should also force all of the tennis players to play doubles so we can maximize the use of the courts for everyone’s fitness. |
At that point hopefully they will convert them to futsal courts and make it more valuable for the community. So much wasted space with so many tennis courts. Facts being told a tennis court being used correctly can service a maximum of 4 people per hour (doubles). The same court can be used to service up to 20 futsal players. If you do the math the city/county gets more bang for the buck by converting all of these many tennis courts to futsal courts. |
Consider this your official "heads up" Each weekend through February you will have your share your beloved and no private tennis courts with other tax paying Alexandrians and others. As for your parking and quiet streets and not carrying things 5 blocks to your home I feel so bad for your privileged self. You cant park your car on public streets on weekends due to kids playing futsal on yoiur tennis courts. My what an awful intrusion of your life. Go call the police if you dont like it. While you are at it maybe open your mind up to getting kids outdoors and providing some level of exercise and fitness that they desperately need during this time. Then again your chosen life might be impacted and that would be unfortunate. |
Futsal isn’t soccer. It requires a hard surface. |
Futsal isn’t a scam, it is a variation of soccer, like softball is to baseball or racquet ball, volley ball and ping pong is to tennis. |
Sounds like the perfect plan! And they will convert the indoor futsal courts to tennis, for a year-round facility for tennis. Win-win! |
| OP, just stop. The tennis courts at Potomac Yards, Chinquapin, and Montgomery Street are all open for tennis, as is the one by the Mount Vernon Rec Center and the one by Grape and Bean. None of these are being used for futsal. There are tennis courts available for tennis players, perhaps just not the particular one you would very most like to use, but they are there for you. |
| So, in January, some people are having their kids play "soccer" on tennis courts? Aren't those cleats terrible for tennis courts? |
No, because futsal is not soccer and is not played in cleats. It is played in a soft-soled shoe. Shoes that are specialized for futsal are ideal, regular sneakers are ok too. No cleats. |
I think you would be disappointed with the indoor futsal facilities that are all loosely converted warehouses in industrial sections or run down sports complexes that generally use basketball courts. You might also be disappointed at the smaller size of a futsal court or the premium you’ll be charged because again, a single tennis court can only be used by a maximum of 4 people versus a basketball or futsal court. |
Oh my god. You're right, you don't understand and have no idea what you are talking about. Go away... |
| Op it sounds like you need to find a quiet retirement home. These are public recreation resources being used by kids! That’s the whole idea! There could also be a tennis tournament there, or a roller hockey one. Surely when you moved there you thought other people besides just your street would be using these amenities we all pay for. Why would we all pay to upkeep your private park? |

A lot of odd attacks on tennis in this thread - tennis is actually thriving in this area. I imagine that none of you have heard of the AA tennis league or the LGBTQ tennis league that exist in this area. Tennis is a pretty diverse sport around here, and easily accessible with a $20 racquet and can of balls.
That being said, if they are taking over Nannie Lee, those courts are in bad shape anyway and not a big loss. Which courts exactly are being used? |
