How to discourage young teen from sexting

Anonymous
I’m sure you can find a documentary about what life on the sex offender list is like. Show her that and take the phone for a year. When she gets it back you have access to all communication.

This. If my teen did this after the first warning/punishment the phone would be GONE. But she knows this.

For what? For having someone send him a text? How was he to prevent that? If he distributed it after receiving it, that's a very different issue.

She could be charged with distributing child pen. He could be charged with possession of child pron. Or production of child porn if he asked for it.

He could be charged for possession if he keeps it. The mere receipt is not a crime, otherwise anyone could cause someone to commit a crime without any action on their part. And I am not sure someone is guilty of producing child porn by "asking" for something. I asked my husband to make burgers for dinner. If he makes them, I have no produced burgers.

I don't get why boys do this? I mean you can literally see anything you want online at any time. Why does he need a photo of HER. Have you talked to his parents? Do you have an older cousin or young adult friend who might be able to talk her through this?

Is it really that difficult to understand? Obviously it's more arousing to have an erotic picture of someone you actually know as opposed to a random woman from the internet.

I think it is more than that. It is about power, control and subjugation. They may not know that’s why they do it but that is why.

Mine told me no one except me monitors phones...lol. I don't think taking everything away is the answer because rebellion is a thing. 13 is young but my kid told me there were kids at her school having gang bangs. It's a different world out there.

That's because they will be having sex, lol.

this, it's not an improvement for a 13 year old to say they wouldn't be sexting if they could see each other

Not necessarily. When someone you like wants to show you something they don't show everyone it's exciting and feels good. Same for adults who sext. NP

That is stupid as an adult you should know the difference. Would you rather have an intimate conversation with you spouse, or a random cam person/chat. Picture, videos, text are all a form of communication.

Making it sound like the sender of the photos is the victim. smh. They have a choice, don't send it. Have self respect. Don't let someone have the "power".

Of course, but we have all known people who don't. People who are insecure, have been emotionally abused by parents or family members, or are seeking affection, are more likely to send pictures when asked, even when they don't really want to. It's kind of like peer pressure, but more so. This thread isn't about adults sending pictures. We're talking about a 13-year-old who doesn't have the capacity to make an adult decision and may have consequences from her actions - legal and otherwise - far beyond what she could imagine.

Also, I'm not suggesting OP is emotionally abusive, just including that as a reason, among others, that teens agree to send pictures.

Stop making excuses for these young women and then blaming the young men. They know what they are doing. Raise your children correctly and this won't be happening.
