Anyway, this year with all the fuss - the crowds will probably be down and security will be up - I'm contemplating going down for a moment of joy like it was on the day the election was called. That was sublime.

Sure he did. A couple days before the inauguration, Obama had a concert in front of the Lincoln Memorial. I went by myself and it was so fun to see the diversity of people there and the great atmosphere. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_One:_The_Obama_Inaugural_Celebration_at_the_Lincoln_Memorial

But no, I would have loved to take my young kids to see the first woman VP who is also Black but between Covid and they will see it on TV instead.

Can't believe someone's acting cooler-than-thou about going to a politician's concert on the Mall. It's like bragging about being at the Us festival.

Not the same by any stretch. A huge section of the mall was taken up with tents - multiple bands playing - it was like a festival where you could get up close to the bands. Lots of good food. Not like being stuck in a huge crowd back behind the Washington Monument. Since you were not there and I went to both you really have no room to comment. So sit back down

Only in DC do people argue about cooler inaugurations.

I live in DC (not downtown) and I am worried. I don't think rioters will be in my neighborhood and I won't go out, but I am afraid of something bigger happening. Someone I know said they were worried that since Trump won't attend inauguration, this opens the door for a large scale attack. Now I can't stop thinking about that. If I had somewhere else to go out of town I would.

I'm in NW DC - before last week I would've assumed that staying home would be enough.

I doubt there will be racist mobs roaming through CP. But I live close a couple of red line stops and near The Days Inn where a bunch of Proud Boys stayed last week, and I actually have no idea what part of town is safe. And I don't have much confidence in our LEO or their ability to implement security measures.

But what about those of us right off the red line?
Any reason to leave?
Please don't ridicule me for asking.

From the 5 carjackers in Friendship Heights, 2 with AK-47s? Or from the daily shootouts in CoHi and Petworth?

Security concerns may have dictated a lot od the difference. So you sit down and think about why.

DC will be fine. Honestly I worry more about places like Pitsburgh, Minneapolis, Kansas City - right wing meccas that have small but vocal and growing liberal areas. That is where there will be clashes.

Random side note. NP. I miss The Taste of DC.

No one wants my car in Friendship Heights, since it was $14,000 brand-new 10 years ago. Easy solution to the carjacking problem!

Another easy solution is to have a manual (standard) shift car.

Minneapolis is a right wing mecca? It's 70% Democratic.

I agree something is up and isn’t sitting well with me

https://www.newsweek.com/parler-offline-qanon-video-inauguration-violence-1560408

A video circulated over 60,000 times on parler before it was shut down was really shocking propaganda calling for full-on war and "panic in DC" on the 20th. It was on youtube but has been removed.

15,000 National Guard troops will be stationed. I'm not worried. I'm more concerned about other places across the country with less security.
