Anyway, this year with all the fuss - the crowds will probably be down and security will be up - I'm contemplating going down for a moment of joy like it was on the day the election was called. That was sublime.

Sure he did. A couple days before the inauguration, Obama had a concert in front of the Lincoln Memorial. I went by myself and it was so fun to see the diversity of people there and the great atmosphere. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_One:_The_Obama_Inaugural_Celebration_at_the_Lincoln_Memorial

But no, I would have loved to take my young kids to see the first woman VP who is also Black but between Covid and they will see it on TV instead.

Not the same by any stretch. A huge section of the mall was taken up with tents - multiple bands playing - it was like a festival where you could get up close to the bands. Lots of good food. Not like being stuck in a huge crowd back behind the Washington Monument. Since you were not there and I went to both you really have no room to comment. So sit back down

Wow - no need to get nasty. Sheesh. The response about Obama's concert wasn't nasty.

We do not plan on going out on Jan 19 or Jan 20 either. It's not that we feel unsafe, but I really don't need to see any more crazy people roving around the city than I usually do.

Do you think that your lower income Black and Brown neighbors feel the same way? Especially those who need to work service jobs and people living on the streets?

Let's protect them too.

?? When did I say that they shouldn't be protected? WTF?

NP here. What a needlessly obnoxious response

What do you think most of us here, middle aged white collar professionals who have never even laid eyes on any sort of weapon, can do to protect ourselves, much less our POC friends and neighbors?

If that’s a serious question, I think all of us should avoid the fray. However, if you are a White middle aged white collar professional, you are likely not a target. As a Black middle aged white collar professional, I might be. If you show some obvious connection with me, that will likely keep both of us safe. So, if you see me wending my way to a farmer’s market, followed a little bit too closely by Trumpers, please say “Hi”, loudly, and act like I’m your Boo. A quick act of friendship, which some Trumpers would likely view as ownership, could well save my life.

Yes, this has happened to me more than once.

Oof, I missed that the first time I read it. That's painful but true.

Fair question, OP. I am not worried living in Glover Park with no plans to go near the mall this month, though reading this above today raises concern as it sounds like more can happen anywhere. VP house next door to me

I work in D.C., and our "company" told us to NOT come in that week.

NP here. I bet! Clinton's was pretty good, though.

I’m gonna go down there with a rifle and go redneck hunting. Just kidding of course. I have zero desire to watch an inauguration in person.

Nope. Gonna get absorbed into MD.

My prediction is that security will be very tight and the the number of domestic terrorists who show up will be relatively small. The terrorists are losing social media platforms through which to communicate. This will make it more difficult for them to organize on a mass scale.

DC will not be safe. Yes, there will be an increased law enforcement presence. But people are plotting violence on right wing social media. We are in the part of the scary movie where everything seems fine and people think they are safe. Trump unleashed something that cannot easily be contained. My fear is that there will be much more violence in the next year.

And for the people who think this is no big deal, you obviously have no MAGA relatives or (former) friends. Many of them have lost. their. minds. I say this as someone who has voted Republican in previous elections, although never for Trump.

Staying HOME. Worried and monitoring the news. Will be much more comfortable if Pence can step in so the National Guard can be deployed effectively. A lot can happen between now and then... not sure where we'd go to (thanks Covid)

I’m worried about the million armed march. Are they going to have guns on WMATA? What hotels are foolishly housing them?
