will DC be safe on the 20th?

Anyway, this year with all the fuss - the crowds will probably be down and security will be up - I'm contemplating going down for a moment of joy like it was on the day the election was called. That was sublime.

Sure he did. A couple days before the inauguration, Obama had a concert in front of the Lincoln Memorial. I went by myself and it was so fun to see the diversity of people there and the great atmosphere. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_One:_The_Obama_Inaugural_Celebration_at_the_Lincoln_Memorial

But no, I would have loved to take my young kids to see the first woman VP who is also Black but between Covid and they will see it on TV instead.

Not the same by any stretch. A huge section of the mall was taken up with tents - multiple bands playing - it was like a festival where you could get up close to the bands. Lots of good food. Not like being stuck in a huge crowd back behind the Washington Monument. Since you were not there and I went to both you really have no room to comment. So sit back down

I'm seeing screenshots on Parler from people threatening violence on the 19th into the 20th. I would feel pretty unsafe.

DC has a major uptick in crime from the local population

Nothing compared to out of town crimes just committed in one day.

Bombs, IEDs, insurrection. Stop sending us your criminals.

We live downtown and actually didn't see much going on, but we stayed indoors for all of Wednesday. It was cold anyway, no reason to go out.

We do not plan on going out on Jan 19 or Jan 20 either. It's not that we feel unsafe, but I really don't need to see any more crazy people roving around the city than I usually do.

Do you think that your lower income Black and Brown neighbors feel the same way? Especially those who need to work service jobs and people living on the streets?

Let's protect them too.

I’m not sticking around to find out.

Trump won't be there. Some whackos will be around but honestly, there have been whackos protesting at pretty much every inauguration over the last 40 years. Given the level of security anticipated I wouldn't worry too much about them.

You think the main problem will be traffic?!

What do you think most of us here, middle aged white collar professionals who have never even laid eyes on any sort of weapon, can do to protect ourselves, much less our POC friends and neighbors?

I'm incredibly nervous for the inauguration. There is a lot of traffic across Paler, Reddit, and other lesser known platforms currently organizing for some very dangerous actions. Whether or not they will be successful, I don't know, but I am very nervous. That said, I also live in a predominantly Black neighborhood, and I suspect these folks will not venture our way...

I'd be less worried about the 20th because there is going to be a serious military/police/national guard/secret service presence city wide, unlike on the 6th. I wouldn't venture out though if I could avoid it. I attended one of the Clinton inaugurations and Bush sr. and the security around the entire perimeter for those events was unreal (had to go through multiple checkpoints with metal detectors, etc to get to anywhere near the parade route or swearing in), and I'd think this will be even more of a security presence after what happened this week.

I'm wondering how much planning there is by people who want to show up and make trouble? Clearly, there was a lot for 1/6, is there a similar amount of chatter for 1/20?

If that’s a serious question, I think all of us should avoid the fray. However, if you are a White middle aged white collar professional, you are likely not a target. As a Black middle aged white collar professional, I might be. If you show some obvious connection with me, that will likely keep both of us safe. So, if you see me wending my way to a farmer’s market, followed a little bit too closely by Trumpers, please say “Hi”, loudly, and act like I’m your Boo. A quick act of friendship, which some Trumpers would likely view as ownership, could well save my life.

Yes, this has happened to me more than once.

The entire year will be a dangerous one. Be aware of unattended packages and threats on social media. If you work in a federal building, ask them to dust off their evacuation plans.

+1

The bombing will come next I suspect.

You can also expect for the general public to start losing access to many federal buildings.
