I tried the crappy husband/dad line of thought. Turns out (at least from what he has told me) that isn’t the case. I’m inclined to believe him based on what I have observed.

Also, I was hoping he was a republican (very possible given his background). That is dealbreaker for me. It was a big surprise when we started talking politics and I learned that was definitely not the case.

No, didn’t say that at all. Sounds like it was pretty mutual and they both tried to save the marriage, but it just wasn’t working. They get along and co-parent well.
