We shale see after the next census. I bet less black, way more Hispanics and less but higher income whites.

This is us too. We are also moderates, leaning conservative, and we moved here for the schools and to be close to DC, where we both work. We live in the section near the schools and love it. The more activist residents dominate the government of TP and are the most vocal, but most people just talk about their kids, schools and daily lives. I’m from the Midwest and it reminds of there — down to earth and friendly.

TP is getting more and more expensive. I'm sure you will be fine.

Yes, TKPK is liberal, but politics do not dominate discussions among neighbors. I met a TkPk Republican and he was great. We talked for hours. It’s good to disagree with people on some things. There’s even a city-run Republican garden, right next to the Democratic one, and they’re equally nice.

This. You can coexist peacefully.

The point is that everyone is welcome in TKPK.

Can you all say more about why? I’d describe myself the same way and we’ve been contemplating whether a move to TP would be good for our family.

Remember that left Democrats are not tolerant at all to any other perspective. If you are not very liberal you might feel “not among like minded people” and they will never stop trying to convert you.

I think you may be a little confused about intolerance.

I’m the +1, and that’s not how I’d put it. I just don’t think a lot of the people there are truly that liberal. I think TKPK has that reputation and there’s a lot of crunchiness (which I find irritating), which isn’t quite the same as progressive. It’s also a very expensive place to live, and to me that limits how truly progressive the citizens are.

Also, I think the line that Democrats are intolerant is tired garbage. Resisting racism doesn’t make you intolerant, it makes you a decent human being. I’m very liberal and very tolerant, but not of bigotry disguised as an alternate perspective or whatever euphemism people want to use. That goes for “Democrats” and Republicans.

It's a diverse area in that there are pockets that are varied. For example, the historic district area probably has more in common with Chevy Chase than large apartment buildings a half mile from there down Maple but they're both part of TKPK. I think many residents enjoy being in a diverse place.

OP you will be considered racist if you don’t toe the line in Takoma Park. Who wants that? MD is a blue state and the suburbs around DC in MD are very blue also. Kensington is not Republican. You would have to search hard to even find a republican in the near suburbs. Maybe CCMD. But why would you choose the most liberal community in MD if that’s not who you are?

Perfectly stated. Intolerance disguised as humanitarian.

You and your spouse get irate when people talk about eliminating racism and sexism?

white privilege is such a weird thing.

If your wife is concerned about things like reverse discrimination or invading hordes of migrants you might want to stay away the metro area altogether and move back to Alabama.

OP here: Can my wife have white privilege if she is not white? One version of white privilege is safely feeding on the privilege while slinging around casual charges of racism at everyone else and demanding that brown folk toe your ideological line.
