School Within School (SWS) worth a year in a swing space?

DCPS posted the mtg tonight. Sounds like they still aren’t ready to announce a swing location.

Because they are getting flamed for shutting down Wash Met because they want the building for swing space.

The mayor put swing space location in her letter to the Council which was tasteless asf

What does this mean? The mayor designated Wash Met as the swing space for SWS, or as swing space generally?

Good point -- swing space but nothing specific about which school will use it. Pretty clear given long overdue swing space announcement for SWS that WM was considered a likely candidate. Mayor trying to see how many different school communities she can simultaneously piss off, or maybe she liked the Shaw MS playbook of pitting factions against each other rather than owning any of her terrible decision making.

Maybe SWS can become more of a citywide school when the swing space is in operation.

What’s the point of that though if they then go back to their relatively public transport inaccessible location and those families leave? It would just create pointless turnover that isn’t good for anyone.

Yes, bc this is the point of a modernization. Gut a school to it's core. Maybe you should have several seats.

Building debris and dust are not safe or healthy (as we learned the hard way--think stinging throats and burning eyes). Kids at Maury Village suffered a similar problem when they had the (benefit? Hah!) of going to school for two years in trailers next to an ongoing construction project: https://wjla.com/features/7-on-your-side/children-sickened-at-dc-school-environmental-contiminants. Would you want to work next to an active construction site? (Be honest. You wouldn't.) So why is it okay to ask the same of young children?

Yeah, you're one of the 3 parents who overly freaked out over that. It was inconvenient and didn't seem totally thought out, but really NBD and passed like a flash. Now we have a perfect brand-new school. But hey, I'm sure that there will be many, many parents willing to take SWS spots from families that can't deal with trailers and trucks for 2 years.

Not, actually. We had no horse in that race. Glad your kid enjoyed that shit show though.

DCPS "promised" to announce the SWS swing space before the lottery deadline so that parents can make informed decisions. However, DCPS has broken all trust with SWS parents so far. So at this point,I wouldn't be surprised if they don't announce until after the lottery deadline.

Also, it should be pointed out that Brent is slated for modernization a year after SWS yet already has a SIT team and architect on board. SWS, which is scheduled for modernization in four months (they claim they will start as soon as the kids are out of the building this summer), has NOTHING yet. No SIT, no architect, no swing space. Nada.

PP here. I just want to make it clear that DCPS runs the process for modernization (since someone could misinterpret my previous post and put the blame on SWS).

So you didn't even have a kid at Maury Village and yet you're here opining on it? Gotcha.

This is all so strange. I'm ranking SWS for the lottery. As I recall, you can tweak your rankings (but not the school selections) for a little longer after the lottery deadline, but that's really asking people to pay a lot of attention.

Nah bro. I commented on dealing with construction and its ill-effects, and invited parents to consider whether that’s something they’d want to put their children through, citing Maury as an example. If you need help with reading comprehension, perhaps your preschooler can help.

And the PP had a legit question about a term being used in the thread. Your point?

See the MSDC FAQ. You can re-rank up until the deadline but then it is locked until initial results come out. Once results are out, you can again rerank to your heart’s content.

So IF you were to rank SWS high and got in, and then decided you don’t like the swing space you must start all over and go to the back of the line. Everything below it will have fallen off your list.

No, there's a weird interim period where you can rerank the schools on your list pre-results.
