School Within School (SWS) worth a year in a swing space?

Unclear how the kids will get PE indoors in that case. And as another posted said, construction will last two years, not one.

An alrington school had a reno and there was a trailer gym. It was an actual relocate able classroom designed to be a gym...think doublewide trailer. It was crazy.

Maury had a big multipurpose tent. The kids can live for a year without a ton of space for indoor recess. Not ideal, but a trade-off for getting a better facility. We are really fortunate in DC to have a community that can invest in our school facilities, so just focus on that?

It's two years, not one. See previous posts on this.

Did the Arlington school have a lot more square footage to work with? B/c SWS's acreage is limited, and they'd still need to leave room for construction equipment, supplies, and work areas.

Oh my lord. My friends: we've lived through a renovation. It sucked. If you've never done it, I don't recommend it. Building debris and dust are not safe or healthy (as we learned the hard way--think stinging throats and burning eyes). Kids at Maury Village suffered a similar problem when they had the (benefit? Hah!) of going to school for two years in trailers next to an ongoing construction project: https://wjla.com/features/7-on-your-side/children-sickened-at-dc-school-environmental-contiminants. Would you want to work next to an active construction site? (Be honest. You wouldn't.) So why is it okay to ask the same of young children?

It looks like there is a meeting tonight re SWS. Is the swing space expected to be announced?

Yeah, you're one of the 3 parents who overly freaked out over that. It was inconvenient and didn't seem totally thought out, but really NBD and passed like a flash. Now we have a perfect brand-new school. But hey, I'm sure that there will be many, many parents willing to take SWS spots from families that can't deal with trailers and trucks for 2 years.

DCPS posted the mtg tonight. Sounds like they still aren’t ready to announce a swing location.

I think PP meant to write that DCPS postponed tonight’s meeting.

Because they are getting flamed for shutting down Wash Met because they want the building for swing space.

Isn’t WashMet a little far for the swing space? I guess there’s no easy answer.

yes and SWS doesn't want it. DCPS trying to force it on SWS and blame the big bad gentrifiers for their decision to close WM. SWS wants trailers at Spingam (Benning Rd near TR Young)

Does DCPS legally have to announce the swing space location by March 2nd or is it possible this keeps dragging on?

DCPS didn't learn their lesson with the CHML bussing situation.

The mayor put swing space location in her letter to the Council which was tasteless asf

No kidding. The new budget projects CHML will be down like 50 students because the move has annihilated them.

What does this mean? The mayor designated Wash Met as the swing space for SWS, or as swing space generally?
