I think there’s a chance they put off the renovation assuming COVID is still a concern come January. |
One also wonders whether budget shortfalls might lead to renovation delays. |
I've seen most improvement projects accelerating as construction is still "essential." |
But between the budget shortfall, the fact the renovation hasn’t started yet and the likelihood that DCPS tries to implement some social distancing/mitigation type measures on return that are harder in tiny trailers, I wouldn’t count of school renovation starting mid-next year. |
| Thanks all. I’d posed the Q about the pandemic affecting renovation plans. I know the transition won’t start until Jan., but since we’re expecting more outbreak periods in the fall/winter (depending on what public health measures are in place), I figured that’d be a particularly bad time to cram kids and educators into smaller-than-normal rooms. I appreciate the other insights offered re: construction timing setbacks due to budget issues. I hadn’t considered that. |
Has anyone actually posed this question to DCPS? We're short on the waitlist for SWS. Not sure how we feel about the idea of being in trailers if it we get in, given COIVD concerns. |
| Frustrating how little info one gets from DCPS right now. |
To me, trailers with individual HVAC and the outdoor walkways like the Maury Village had seem more COVID friendly than a traditional building (I don't know if the windows open in new schools or if they're like ofc buildings). |
Leave the wait list if you aren't interested. At least 400 kids in line behind you. |
I think a lot of parents have questions. Our K WL number of SWS is lower than for Brent or Maury... That has never happened before in our experience w/ the lottery across multiple kids. |
|
SWS parent here. We’ve been told the renovation is on track, plus it’s reflected in the mayor’s recent budget.
I agree with an above comment that trailers actually sounds more Covid friendly than a school building. (No shared hallways, vents, etc.) FWIW: We player the lottery back in February due to uncertainty over the swing space situation. We’re actually #1 on the WL for Brent but plan to stay at SWS. (We’re not excited about the swing space but there are too many good things about the school to try elsewhere.) |
