Last time I checked, freezing rain didn't kill people. Stay home if you're that petrified of it, and take AL. |
Ditto. Administrative offices are open today so aftercare programs are open all day. You can drop your kid off at school at the usual time. You don’t have to be a regular user of aftercare. You can sign up just for days like today at most schools. |
Nope. Just know every fed telework/compressed schedule/computer screen staring employee is living the good life. Meanwhile the contractors who bust their *ss get nothing. I was a fed supporter until the shutdown. I saw how nicely that played out for you all & how no one gave a sh*t about the contractors. So- if it’s so terrible, leave. |
You are desperately grasping at straws now. Get off DCUM and start calling your mom friends who aren’t enraged at being home today. See if one will watch your kid so you can go seethe at work where your child doesn’t have to see it. |
The federal government is huge. I hate it when people think they can make broad statements about work place policies/work ethic/work load. Yes I got paid for the shut down...and worked TONS of unpaid hours afterwards to keep up with my deadlines. I would have much rather not had to shutdown. It has been a terrible year. |
Many private companies allow managers to use their own discretion about permitting employees to work from home on snow days, and many do. Fed employees have to wait on OPM and their hands are tied. |
Lighten up francis! I'm only up because I thought I had to get my kid to school but alas he gets to sleep and I'm already on use or lose.... and will be until 1/6/2020 Merry Christmas cranky pants!

Drove 25 miles from Fairfax County to Rockville this morning. Wet roads. Secondary roads in MoCo had a little slush, but were easily navigable.
Certainly no need for any delay or cancellation by the federal government. Even some of the school closings are questionable... |
| You’re mad at the wrong place. Blame school districts for not thinking of working families. They’re tone deaf and out of touch. The least they can do is open their doors to be a warm place for kids to go until school starts. Plenty of kids now have no one at home with them for 2 hours. |
| No way should you be teleworking with young children at home anyways. |
| I’m thrilled that I have a job that allows me to use unscheduled leave at times like this - that feels like great flexibility. No way would I expect them to actually close because of the school’s decision to delay? That seems crazy entitled and might in the end make employers more reluctant to employ parents. I maintain some leave just for these situations. |
I had to be in by 9:15, no excuses, and my DH is out of town. This weather was in the forecast for a few days, so yesterday morning I started reaching out to people to see if anyone could watch my kids if schools were delayed/closed. By noon, I had a plan in place. |
| I feel like these same posts appear literally every time a delay or closure happens. |
| I feel like if schools are going to do a delay they should at least open the gym so kids can come in and get warm somewhere safe. |
Grow a brain. Plenty of feds don’t have those options. You’re just jealous. |
