Shepherd Park Deal Feed

Why would you want to send your kids to school with people you think are racist?

There is simply no way they will cut out the one portal for poor black kids into deal. SES isn’t great but without it many black Families would find themselves in a pinch and Wilson would accelerate becoming a mostly white and higher SES high school which makes the rest of DC feel uneasy.

I don't know why people are struggling to get this but Deal doesn't have a lot of low income kids anymore.

Shepherd is a portal for middle class kids, many black but some white, to get into Deal.

It is not a portal for low income kids to get into Deal.

Create a second viable middle school for high SES earners and then use the extra capacity to actually get low income AA kids into those schools, something that is not really happening today.

Disagree completely. People don't just want to attend Shepherd ES to have a path to Deal and Wilson. Shepherd is a very good school in it's own right.

+1. The apples to apples, SES outperforms many WOTP schools (white, black, low income).

Previous couple of posters are vested boosters clearly. Not one person who isn’t thinks like that

Why are you such a hater? Bitter you couldn’t buy in the neighborhood?

Chocolate City melted away 10 years ago. DC is gentrifying rapidly. In another 10 years no one will care.

The best policy is to examine the data. Review which school’s students over the past several years have performed most poorly academically compared to their peers, which are truant the most and which students are involved in serious misconduct. Crunch the data and jettison the lowest performing school. Why waste a Deal education on students who don’t give a damn and create disruption for the rest. Let’s cull Deal based on objective data.

This topic has been analyzed front and back followed by sideways. This will not happen. Shepherd has the largest voter turnout and every mayor knows to keep SP constituents very happy.

The current mayor may care about Shepherd but she cares a lot more about her developer cronies who provide the cash to her PAC, her campaign and ...? She is their corrupt ho; they are her johns.

I am not a fan of hers but this language and characterization of a successful woman of color is disgusting.

Another stupid comment.

Everyone who lives in DC should be grateful for all the development you are bemoaning because it has swelled the cities coffers and enabled the now 15 year infrastructure spree the city has been on. Or maybe you preferred Janney, Murch, Lafayette, Stodderd Mann, Eaton (soon), Deal & Wilson before the city spent over 600 million dollars expanding and modernizing them?

Or maybe you preferred the old fire stations & rec centers?

Anonymous wrote:This is a very hot button topic. Shepherd Elementary School is very small. If SES got moved to another feeder pattern it really wouldn’t reduce the numbers at Deal. 50 kids is a drop in the bucket. But the Ward 3 parents and a group of parents (who I know) don’t like minorities which is why they want to remove SES. There are very active parents who are voicing their concerns with city council. I think removal from Deal/Wilson is unlikely in the next round.

This is a huge generalization. Do you know all Ward 3 parents?

NP. My kids are almost done with Wilson and we were a Lafayette family. The sentiments that PPP noted above are 100% accurate. It may be a minority of white parents that think this way, BUT THEY DO EXIST!! I witnessed it with my own eyes. As a URM family - it was disgusting and disheartening to think that you are in a community with people that think this way. It's not a generalization or overstatement.

Yup, we were around the CCDC neighborhood during the last round of the boundary process - it brought out the most absolute ugliness of my neighbors.

Of course they exist. Some white people will fight like hell to keep their children from going to school with black children. They existed fifty years ago and they exist now.

Anyway, one can set their watch to this thread appearing every 6 months or so. Shepherd will not be removed from the Deal/Wilson feeder, despite the wishes of a few racists WOTP. There is no reason to do it and the parents in SES catchment are way too politically powerful, even if you exclude the Mayor herself.

This is a stupid comment. Both Deal and Wilson are very diverse and Shepherd is not even close to being all AA anyhow.

Shepherd makes sense to move because well geez it is the closest school to McFarland and Deal is ridiculously over crowded.

It also makes sense to move Lafayette because well it is the next closest school and Deal is ridiculously overcrowded.

And sure Shepherd is small but 50-75 kids per grade is not insignificant either but that is also why another school needs to be moved at the same time. And there really is only one other school that makes sense.

Shepherd is still 78% AA according to the most recent data. I would call that “close” to being all AA.

The two schools always discussed being removed are Shepherd and Bancroft, the two schools that provide the largest number of minority students. I find it so troubling that people are so nonchalant about this. Bigotry is just disgusting. Rich white people hoard the resources.

Rich white people ARE the resources. A healthy population of high SES kids is the only thing DCPS has in their toolbox to turn schools around. You don’t want your kid to go to Deal, you want your kids in a majority white school.

SES IB crows are largely UMC white and light-skinned parents who don’t want their kids going to school with dark-skinned Ward 4 kids from poorer homes. Let’s stop pretending that there isn’t also a racist/colorist motive behind the SES-Deal pipeline proponents.
