Shepherd Park Deal Feed

If SES got moved to another feeder pattern it really wouldn’t reduce the numbers at Deal. 50 kids is a drop in the bucket. But the Ward 3 parents and a group of parents (who I know) don’t like minorities which is why they want to remove SES. There are very active parents who are voicing their concerns with city council. I think removal from Deal/Wilson is unlikely in the next round.

This is a huge generalization. Do you know all Ward 3 parents?

NP. My kids are almost done with Wilson and we were a Lafayette family. The sentiments that PPP noted above are 100% accurate. It may be a minority of white parents that think this way, BUT THEY DO EXIST!! I witnessed it with my own eyes. As a URM family - it was disgusting and disheartening to think that you are in a community with people that think this way. It's not a generalization or overstatement.

Yup, we were around the CCDC neighborhood during the last round of the boundary process - it brought out the most absolute ugliness of my neighbors.

A person with an infant when it begins should be more wary.

Agree.

The grandfathering was based on the class year. So odd to be in a elementary where one grade gets Deal-Wilson and the next grade below gets a completely different MS-HS feeder. It must make for odd dynamics within the school.

Here's the DC grandfathering rules from last time: https://dcps.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dcps/publication/attachments/Boundary%20and%20Feeder%20Pattern%20Changes%20FAQ.pdf

Op here- this is super helpful!! Thank you!

It seems to me from looking at that helpful link that my son has to be enrolled at Shepherd Park elementary to get the deal feed if they change the boundaries. Is that right? If for whatever reason we decide to attend a charter, and they change the boundary, we would be in McFarland middle. Does that sound correct?

Of course they exist. Some white people will fight like hell to keep their children from going to school with black children. They existed fifty years ago and they exist now.

Anyway, one can set their watch to this thread appearing every 6 months or so. Shepherd will not be removed from the Deal/Wilson feeder, despite the wishes of a few racists WOTP. There is no reason to do it and the parents in SES catchment are way too politically powerful, even if you exclude the Mayor herself.

If they do it the same as last time (a huge if) then yes, your child would need to be in the feeder school to get the grandfathered feeder rights. Of course, you'd be allowed to pull your kid out of the charter and enroll at Shepherd as an in-bounds student at any point in the school year.

If Shepherd is redistricted I think it's more likely you'd be sent to Wells and Coolidge than MacFarland and Roosevelt. Bancroft and Oyster are more likely to get the MacFarland/Roosevelt feed since that's the programmatic feed for all the other bilingual DCPS programs.

PP here. Ok, you’re right. A *large group* of Ward 3 parents.

Bowser won't be mayor forever, and the Green Team bench is finally thin (thank god). Todd has no chance of following her into office -- he's a cretin -- and very well could get voted off the Council next election.

Once Bowser is gone, all bets are off with regards to this issue.

Well then you all outside of SP need to step up the influence in local politics. Bowser isn’t what is keeping SES in the feeder pattern. Also removing SES won’t fix the overcrowding. Taking 50 kids out isn’t much... not even one team.

50 kids across 3 grades = 150 kids. Definitely not a drop in the bucket. And you know it.

This is a stupid comment. Both Deal and Wilson are very diverse and Shepherd is not even close to being all AA anyhow.

Shepherd makes sense to move because well geez it is the closest school to McFarland and Deal is ridiculously over crowded.

It also makes sense to move Lafayette because well it is the next closest school and Deal is ridiculously overcrowded.

And sure Shepherd is small but 50-75 kids per grade is not insignificant either but that is also why another school needs to be moved at the same time. And there really is only one other school that makes sense.

It is 50 kids TOTAL from SES that graduate each year to Deal.
