Discussion Boundary Map out for APS- elementary schools

Have they said whether all option schools are on the table for possible movement?

One possibility: move immersion from Key to Patrick Henry/current Montessori, where there are more Spanish speakers close by, Montessori to NW.

I wish they put numbers with this showing how many kids are at each school.

Speaking of, when are the Sept. enrollment numbers coming out? I keep looking. They are normally posted by now. Makes me wonder what's up.

There’s no point in giving detailed data for the map because it’s not the start of a boundary discussion that they’ll be working from. It’s a rough “here’s what it would look like if we just balanced enrollment and didn’t move option schools, so assume all neighborhood schools would be at the same % capacity and then do the math if you feel the need to know how many students would be at each school.

Yes, no one should be getting bent out of shape over this as it is an intentional tool to manipulate the community. APS has no intention of implementing something like this, they are just want this as the starting point in people's minds so they will come around to their follow up options and think "oh this is so much better" so don't go beating down APS doors, this is going to change

There are definitely a few places that seem to have been drawn to piss off the maximum number of people. I kind of love it, though. Much more effective than words to show that there is a cost to not moving any option programs and it's not just to one neighborhood.

I was able to roughly overlay the "what if" map with the planning unit map to help clarify the boundary edges. Yes, I know this is hypothetical and will never be the final answer, but I still like to analyze what they present.

Given that the Patrick Henry building will likely be demolished within the next 5-7 years to build out the career center, my guess is that moving ATS to the NW is more likely. ATS is the least walkable school in the system owing to its location at the intersection of two of the county’s busiest roads. And, it’s very close to the neighborhoods that keys current Spanish speakers transfer from. Kind of a no brainer.

Make Barcroft an option school. Lot of local latino kids would be able to walk there. If you think about the number of Latino kids who currently walk to Barcroft - that would get APS its 1/2 Spanish for the immersion program.

Let the Barcroft neighborhood go to Barrett. For some in Barcroft, Barrett is equidistant.

Barcroft is good for walkers, terrible for buses. An immersion school can’t just serve walkers.

I don't have any problem with moving immersion to be closer to native populations. But there's still a huge issue that won't be solved by moving the program alone-- getting these families to enter the lottery 6 months before school starts.

If we had the earlier situation where there was a guaranteed neighborhood entry, it would be very different. But even if you plop a school right in the middle of a 100% Spanish-speaking neighborhood, if you don't invest the time and money to communicate the lottery system to them, you're not going to see the droves of walkers that people assume would enroll.

But no longer walkable.
And there is insufficient bus loop space, parking space, and access to the building for an option school.
Barcroft is one of the most walkable schools in the County - and everyone insists we have to make the more walkable schools neighborhood. So why do some people keep pushing Barcroft to become an option school? Walkability only matters when it's in certain neighborhoods??
Why not make Barrett the option site?

My understanding is that the seats stay open until the end of summer before they are offered to people on the English speaker wait list. Even if the initial lottery is missed someone could still enroll up through July or so. Is it possible the interest just isn't there?

Hard to believe we're already fighting about this. It's going to be a long year and a half.

We've been fighting about this since they started the walk zone review a year and a half ago. Welcome to the party!

Key to ATS, ATS to the NW. that’s enough to solve the seat imbalance and likely all the central admin can handle.

Which NW school will get ATS? I'm betting Tuckahoe.

Actually nevermind, looking at that map it looks like they're signaling it will be McKinley
