| I dont know if OP is in MC or not. Yes, there is a trend to discredit Asian families and Asian students in MCPS, mostly by central office. They don't like to see the academic success achieved by Adian students because it posts challege to white students and contributes to the achievement gap. The white parents are unsetting because their snowflakes are not the best students in the schools anymore . Asian students also broke the myth that minority students have bad grades in school because of the white privileges. |
This isn't true, or at least it isn't new. Asians have been the model minority for decades and the stereotype is just as harmful as any other. |
The Asian American stereotype has been around ever since I was a kid in the 1980s and I grew up in Maryland. And it goes much further back. It has nothing to do with "white privilege." The real anger, if there is one, is how a minority and technically "people of color" and this includes South Asians, can succeed and dominate academically despite being "people of color." And the anger is not coming from white people but from African American social warriors who attribute the lagging averages for AA students to racial discrimination. You see this attitude on this forum all the time. A school that has a high percentage of Asian and South Asian intake is still not "diverse" because it still doesn't have many AA students. It's contradictory but it tells you quite a bit how racial politics are played and defined in this country. |
| ^ no it is not “diverse” when everyone is MC or Umc |
Outside of school, yes, by all means. At school, no. It’s for the kids to have fun and try new things, not for the parents to build up pressure. |
School sports teams and competitions create pressure. Top tier band and orchestra programs create pressure. All of these activities lead to kids practicing many hours after school in an effort to be the best. Do you propose getting rid of these to relieve pressure? |
I was on school sports teams and had to practice a couple hours after school each day. Not 5-6. |
Those are what we call "extracurriculars". |
Band and orchestra are graded classes. |
| Not all South Asian or East Asian immigrants to US are MC or UMC. |
True, although I do believe Indians have the highest earning power of any ethnic group. Anyway, regardless, South Asians and Asians are certainly POC and contribute to diversity in schools!!! My kids go to a very diverse school, with people from all over the world, it’s a wonderful thing. |
And not tiger parents are Asian. Still the phenomenon exists. Tiger parents come to good school districts in droves and disrupt them. It’s about the numbers, the concentration of ppl with a different philosophy. Not about their ethnicity or race or class. |

I think this is a large part of it. White parents were accustomed to having their kids shine at everything without working hard. Then, people came along who worked harder and won everything. Rather than developing a work ethic and investing more time into activities, the white parents complain about Asians prepping and "ruining their children's childhood" with too much school. This sentiment is very obvious if you read the AAP forum. There is a huge cultural divide at play, since Asian families are more impressed by work ethic while white ones are more impressed by natural aptitude. White parents have to make a choice. Either they need to decide that winning isn't important and then stop complaining that their children aren't winning, or they need to decide that it is important and work harder. It's absurd to complain that your children aren't the best because someone else is working harder, and that the solution is that the other person needs to stop practicing. I'm white, FWIW. |

White mom here. Yes you are right. I want my kids to have a childhood that does not feel like drill school. I also am not a fan of travel sports teams for most kids as they seem ridiculous over investment of time/money vs enjoying playing the sport for fun. I do not want to be in an atmosphere where my kid needs to drill for hours to keep up with the top vs doing a normal amount of work and letting aptitude help them along. I do not think those other parents are bad parents. I just do not want that environment for my kids. We picked a more “normal” (for America) school zone and are happy with the non-extreme level of competitiveness. |
