Would you take Tufts, Emory, Wash U over UVA?

Yes, it’s cheaper because it’s in-state. But not “cheap”. UVA is $40K for in-State students, that’s not cheap by any measure.

Charlottesville is a fun town, but it ain’t Boston or Atlanta.

If you can afford it, Tufts, WashU, and Emory are fantastic schools.

The complete cost for UVA in-state students is estimated at $32,000 including EVERYTHING. That is a lot less than 40,000. Why should we believe anything you have to say if you’re going to exaggerate like that?

Depends on the program. McIntire, which my child is in, is $40K/year all-in.

No it isn't. Only $35,000 for in-state. We paid only $16,000 this year because we are paying tuition only and locked in that rate three years ago. DD moved off campus and shares a group apartment. No car. She's on our health care. When you compare that to $75K a year for a lot of the privates, it's a no brainer, especially when you realize you are paying the delta in after tax dollars, so take even the $35,000 figure. Subtracting from $35K (U of Chicago, Northwestern (now $76K), you have a delta of $40,000 (the delta when DD was applying was $43,000 between privates and UVA in-state). But you are paying that $40,000 to $43,000 in after tax dollars, so you have to make $70K to pay the $40K. Multiply 70K by four or five years and you have a delta of $240K to $350K. We banked the difference, which turned out to be smart because the stock market has done well and DD is off to grad school.

It depends on the college. My D is engineering, for example. Google is your friend: https://sfs.virginia.edu/cost/19-20

Google tells me 38 for engineering

Well, sure. I agree that we are getting a fabulous deal compared to a private college. Just wanted to point out to the "OMG UR SUCH A LIAR!!!!!!" poster that the $40K for McIntire is what UVA publishes on their website as cost of attendance, so it's not an exaggeration. The $32k figure is for the liberal arts school.

reading comprehension issues? Not familiar with ED?

Correct. We are planning ED. The issue is if we get in we are stuck with these privates. I don’t think he gets in UVA EA but does regular. Based on Naviance and ECs. Decent shot at three privates. Income around 300k but will have sister likely at another private (perhaps ivy). And one more after that. We can easily pay all three at state schools. We are in state in Virginia. Private for three will be a stretch.

Plan is ED one of these three, EA UVA, and perhaps ED2 William and Mary if it Clem s down to it.

No way! UVA is just as good as those schools. Why would you give up the in state tuition? Save the money for graduate school.

OP - there you have it. UVA boosters are crazy. Beware.

Look UVA bashers, say what you want about the school but it is a hell of a lot cheaper than comparable privates and you know it. You’re just jealous as hell because you can’t get your kids in.

Stop it, this is embarrassing for you.

I have 5 members in my family who went to UVA (including myself), and you all are acting like it’s Harvard. News flash, it’s a state school. A good one, but don’t get delusions of grandeur.
